Whilst it was generally believed that Columbus was the first European to discover America in 1492, it is now well known that Viking explorers reached parts of the east coast of Canada around 1100 and that Icelandic Leif Erikson’s Vinland may have been an area that is now part of the United States. What is less well known is that a Welshman may have followed in Erikson’s footsteps, this time bringing settlers with him to Mobile Bay in modern day Alabama.

According to Welsh legend, that man was Prince Madog ab Owain Gwynedd.

Columbus Day is a U.S. holiday that commemorates the landing of Christopher Columbus in the Americas in 1492, and Columbus Day 2021 occurs on Monday, October 11. It was unofficially celebrated in a number of cities and states as early as the 18th century, but did not become a federal holiday until 1937.

The holiday is a way of both honoring Columbus’ achievements and celebrating Italian-American heritage.

Christopher Columbus was an Italian-born explorer who set sail in August 1492, bound for Asia with backing from the Spanish monarchs King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella aboard the ships the Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria.

Columbus intended to chart a western sea route to China, India and the fabled gold and spice islands of Asia. Instead, on October 12, 1492, he landed in the Bahamas, becoming the first European to explore the Americas since the Vikings established colonies in Greenland and Newfoundland during the 10th century.

Once we knew the shape and size of the Earth -- from about 240 B.C. -- we were able to figure out all sorts of remarkable things, including the size of and distance to the Moon! So give the credit where credit is due, to Eratosthenes, for discovering the Earth was round, and performing the first accurate calculation of its size!

If there's anything Columbus should be known for, as respects the size and shape of the Earth, it was using unrealistically low numbers for the circumference of the Earth! His estimates, that he used to convince others that one could sail from Europe directly to India (were the Americas non-existant), were absurdly small! Had the Americas not existed, he and his crew surely would have starved before reaching Asia!

We’ve all heard the Christopher Columbus’s ideas of sailing west to get east were rejected time after time, all because the monarchs of the day thought he would simply sail off the edge of the horizon. But actually, it’s thoroughly documented that everyone was well aware the world was round. That “Flat Earth” myth is an invention added to Columbus’s story 400 years later, when Washington Irving decided to write a work of historical fiction based on his life and travels.

It’s well documented that we’ve known the world is round since the days of the mathematical geniuses of ancient Greece. People like Pythagoras, Euclid, and Aristotle all wrote works indicating that clearly, the Earth was round. In fact, Pythagoras’s work Geography was still quite in fashion in Columbus’s day, and no one thought the parts of the map marked “Here Be Dragons” meant it was the end of the world. The ancient Greeks weren’t alone in their calculations either, and there were countless works published before and during the 14th and 15th centuries supporting the knowledge.

Should we be proud of the exact same kind of savage acts that the Indians committed? It seems to me, as someone who is not totally NUTS like most of the rest of you that if it is wrong to celebrate one set of savage acts then it should be just as wrong to celebrate another set of savage acts. This is where the brain dead woke fucks ALWAYS go wrong and come off as foolish looking infantile hypocrites. So much of that in here and probably the single driving reason I rarely take this board serious.
