It won't matter who the candidate is if Obama is out of favor with the public come 2012. Having a strong candidate is just good for hanging on to power.

Yes. In 2004, most people did not perceive him to have fucked up yet. They believed his foreign policy was transforming the Mideast and making us safer.
People will be keeping track of the economy all the way from now, and if he is perceived to have been a failure, he will not get re-elected. Take Carter and Bush I, for examples.
