Default statue of Spanish priest at California Capitol to be replaced by memorial to Native

    tribes

The long-standing statue of a Spanish priest on the grounds of the California State Capitol will be replaced with a monument memorializing Native Americans who lived in the Sacramento area before the arrival of white settlers.

Serra established mission centers up and down the California coast, from San Diego to San Luis Obispo and San Francisco. Many Native Americans were forced to work at these enclaves, resulting in severe abuse and mass deaths.

Despite this, Serra was canonized by Pope Francis in 2015. Pushback against the memorial to Serra in California culminated amid the civil rights protests sparked by the killing of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer in May 2020.

"Today's action sends a powerful message from the grounds of Capitol Park across California underscoring the state's commitment to reckoning with our past and working to advance a California for All built on our values of inclusion and equity," Newsom said in a press release. "I'm proud to sign this long overdue legislation to honor the Native peoples who have called this land home since time immemorial."

Why? What did these native tribes do that was so wonderful? They couldn't even figure out how to get out of the Stone Age...

Good as the Spanish conquistadors who did not discover America but floated upon this hemisphere to spread their violence, diseases, insanity, moral rot and other types of destruction upon humanity. Native Americans are owed much credence who were friends of the land and protectors of their heritage and friends of the common decency of humanity, and for that Native Americans met much betrayal, violence and genocide among European savages who tried to wipe them out and all the way into the 20th century, and who suffered the same type of barbaric atrocities that African Americans of color, Asian Americans and Latino Americans suffered for without which, there would be no America at being instrumental at making America the greatest nation on Earth.

This guy was a pretty important part of California history. He established Missions 'one days walk apart' on the coast of California. Later, these Missions became Cities ... like San Diego and Los Angeles.
