    Default Red COVID

Today's mail brought an interesting -- and very sad -- newsletter from the NYT. A snippet:

"Since Delta began circulating widely in the U.S., Covid has exacted a horrific death toll on red America: In counties where Donald Trump received at least 70 percent of the vote, the virus has killed about 47 out of every 100,000 people since the end of June, according to Charles Gaba, a health care analyst. In counties where Trump won less than 32 percent of the vote, the number is about 10 out of 100,000."

Since it is currently a pandemic of the Deplorable, should it be called the Republican Virus, RepVir-21 now?

*sigh* At least here in the U.S. that seems to be true. I wish that the author had expanded a bit more on this: "In much of the rest of the world, vaccine attitudes do not break down along right-left lines, and some conservative leaders have responded effectively to Covid. So have a few Republican governors in the U.S. “It didn’t have to be this way,” German Lopez of Vox has written."

That was followed by this truthful and chilling bit: "What distinguishes the U.S. is a conservative party — the Republican Party — that has grown hostile to science and empirical evidence in recent decades. A conservative media complex, including Fox News, Sinclair Broadcast Group and various online outlets, echoes and amplifies this hostility. Trump took the conspiratorial thinking to a new level, but he did not create it.

“With very little resistance from party leaders,” my colleague Lisa Lerer wrote this summer, many Republicans “have elevated falsehoods and doubts about vaccinations from the fringes of American life to the center of our political conversation.”"

Why the difference between Reichwingers here and elsewhere?

The first thing authoritarians do is train their base supporters to eschew empirical facts and independent media. That gets them accostomed to being trained dogs, only capable of believing propoganda or the Dear Leader.

This is self evident to people like Vladimir Putin and Aleksandr Lukashenko, who do not take covid super seriously either.

Ego and pride gets involved too. Authoritarians are known for that. The Trumposphere spent all the critical months of 2020 claiming COVID was either a hoax, or no worse than the common cold.

It is hard to climb back down from that ledge without admitting your judgement is catastrophically flawed.

My relatives in Russia say that few people wears masks on the subway, and that because of Putin's pride and xenophobia he is not allowing effective and safe western vaccines into the country in any substantial way, making Russians rely on the homegrown, second tier vaccines currently available.

Russia's innoculation rate also seriously lags well behind Eastern Europe and Western Europe.

Collectively, it is a failure of leadership along Trumpian proportions.

Republicans here are breaking the scales to the right anymore and the real, rare, and breath of fresh air conservatives are center-right by comparison. We need a new Conservative party in this country because republicans aren't cutting it.

Once the Republican Party is reduced to only winning local elections in insane right wing counties

The Democratic Party will cleave in two

And the Conservative party will still be the CEOs party

But it will be cleaner for awhile

We need to make it so ONLY individuals can give money in an election

And a cap on that amount

My hubby says they should do like race car drivers

They should be forced to wear corporate sponsors patches on their clothes

So EVERYONE knows who owns them

Counterpoint: We don't need Conservatism at all since it is an ideology rooted in racism and bigotry.

Let me guess -- you think the Mayo Clinic is a suspicious liberal source too, right?

Are you going to continue with this, supposedly endearing, babble indefinitely ?
