    Default Aotearoa

The Maori Party is pushing to change the name of New Zealand to Aotearoa – Land of the White Cloud. They plan to change all place names, including the capital, Wellington, which will become Te Whanganui-a-Tara.
“It’s well past time that the Maori language was restored to its rightful place as the first and official language of this country.”

New Zealand, one of the Five Eyes, was first sighted by Dutch sailors who named it after the Netherlands province of Zeeland. Later, Captain Cook claimed it for the Crown; and later still, immigrants speaking Cockney English showed up claiming not to be Australians.

Sadly, I doubt if anything will come of this project to change Sea Land to White Cloud Land. The Maori Party only has two out of 120 MPs, and the rest aren’t so keen. It is said to have “lukewarm support” from Jacinda Ardern, if that’s any help.

Why not have both? Like in some countries there's their languages and there's English.

I think they have both. The Maori speak 'Maori' and everybody else speaks English.

Well yeah but they're talking about the names of the places and buildings.

    They could.

In New Zealand, a more regional approach is taken, with “te reo”, the language of the Māori, gradually re-establishing its status in public life. Rotorua and Porirua, two towns on the North Island, have introduced bilingual signs – though not without the same conversations about “confusing” drivers taking place.
