We started algebra in 8th grade middle school.

Mine was called Junior High School ... and yes, we started algebra then also

But maybe I just wasn't aware that there was a second track for grease monkeys who just wanted to take Auto shop class.

We had three types ... college prep, business, professional ... AND ... the irony of the whole thing is that many of the 'professional' track folks made more money than the rest ... auto shop and welding paid off handsomly.

Contextomy fallacy. Semantics fallacy. Graduating students from high school without being able to do algebra, or even arithmetic is a problem. Students do not know history, science, mathematics, or even how to form an English sentence properly, yet they graduated high school.

You forgot those who can't even read their diploma which is nothing more than an "I was there once in a while" certificate.

Have you ever looked at the actual state requirement for successful algebra completion ??? Algebraic addition, subtraction and multiplication ... algebraic division requires knowlege of fractions ... and we all know how well the gameboy crowd loves that.

Have you ever looked at the actual state requirement for successful algebra completion ??? Algebraic addition, subtraction and multiplication ... algebraic division requires knowlege of fractions ... and we all know how well the gameboy crowd loves that.

You can't write computer games without algebra, trigonometry, matrix mathematics, and extensive knowledge of advanced algorithms and data structures.

I sure hope you haven't misunderstood what I am saying ... I am ALL FOR ALGEBRA AND THE ADVANCED MATHEMATICS ... My point is ... the algebra that is being taught is devoid of ALL the elements. Yeah, the kid can add two A and three A ... but can't divide two A and three A . BTW ... how many HS grads know ALL the multiplication tables ???

By “ALL” I am assuming you mean through 12 x 12. I’ll venture about 15% of high school grads. Sad but true from my experience. Then the number that know their perfect square numbers through 400 (20 x 20) … I’d say that number drops to less than 3%. I wish it were better.

my skills are fading; tournament chess games a thing of the past. I was never great , but no patzer either.
I still have pattern recognition and strategic abilities on par with the high scool kid that beat me last live game
I played. I could hear my rusty brain wheels counting the moves in my head

Young minds are nimble and should be able to teach to anything, Need a teach that inspires them

Why?

Everyone learns differently...has different situations...cognitive, emotional, social, environmental....why not take an approach which will optimize learning?
(Algebra applications in auto class might very well be much easier to learn for some than just sitting in class staring at the board....Know your students...There are so many options available.... I do think it's important to be able to make change...don't you?
