From hubris to humiliation: America’s warrior class contends with the abject failure of its Afghanistan project

Twenty years ago, when the twin towers and the Pentagon were still smoldering, there was a sense among America’s warrior and diplomatic class that history was starting anew for the people of Afghanistan and much of the Muslim world.

“Every nation has a choice to make,” President George W. Bush said on the day that bombs began falling on Oct. 7, 2001. In private, senior U.S. diplomats were even more explicit. “For you and us, history starts today,” then-Deputy Secretary of State Richard L. Armitage told his Pakistani counterparts.

“You look at the Afghan constitution that was created in Bonn and it was trying to create a Western democracy,” said Michèle Flournoy, one of the architects of President Barack Obama’s troop surge in Afghanistan in 2010. “In retrospect, the United States and its allies got it really wrong from the very beginning. The bar was set based on our democratic ideals, not on what was sustainable or workable in an Afghan context.”

While often categorized as a democracy, the United States is more accurately defined as a constitutional federal republic. Additionally, considering the following facts:

According to the 2018 survey, the United States is the world’s most powerful country. The United States has the world’s largest economy, with a GDP of $20.49 trillion and the most massive military budget of $610 billion."

Iraq #1 (the war following Iraq's invasion of Kuwait) was a resounding success.

Vietnam failed because of a Democrat getting us involved in a big way. Afghanistan failed because a Democrat that doesn't know what day of the week it is decided we should leave.

You know when Biden first came into office I would have thought his first act would be leading the US out of covid and into normalcy. The vaccines were developed. We were doing 1 m shots a day when he took over. But somehow were going back to lockdowns and the first historically significant act from Biden would be to preside over the capitulation of the US to the taliban.

    Well done.

After a week-long deal to reduce violence across Afghanistan, the U.S. and the Taliban signed a historic agreement Saturday that would see U.S. troops start to withdraw, according to a statement issued Friday afternoon by President Donald Trump.

"Soon, at my direction, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will witness the signing of an agreement with representatives of the Taliban, while Secretary of Defense Mark Esper will issue a joint declaration with the government of Afghanistan. If the Taliban and the government of Afghanistan live up to these commitments, we will have a powerful path forward to end the war in Afghanistan and bring our troops home," Trump said.

What about Dotard "historic" decision to bring troops home?

Well- you can't attempt to export ' democracy ' and support Neo-Zionist fascism simultaneously. Foreigners get upset with duplicity and hypocrisy.

The road to rebuilding America's character lies in providing safe-haven for Afghan collaborators. Otherwise....................

The problem is we knew we had a september 11 deadline. Why at Aug 15 is there still more than 1000 people in the embassy and something like 44000 translators stuck in afghanistan?

Thats just incompetence. They could have begun withdrawing so much earlier.

I think it was expected that the Afghan army would continue to fight and die to buy time to get Americans out. Now they're ALL Taliban and the US has the eggiest face in its short history.

    The writing was always on the wall;

Civilian catastrophe as US bombs Afghan wedding

    - Witnesses say attack lasted 2 hours
    - Pentagon: 'One bomb went astray'

    Wech Baghtu wedding party airstrike

The Wech Baghtu wedding party airstrike refers to the killing of about 37 Afghan civilians, mostly women and children, and injuring about 27 others by a United States military airstrike on 3 November 2008. The group was celebrating a wedding at a housing complex in the village of Wech Baghtu, a Taliban stronghold in the Shah Wali Kot District of Kandahar province, Afghanistan

On 5 November 2008, Afghan President Hamid Karzai responded by demanding that newly elected US President Barack Obama end civilian deaths, stating "Our demand is that there will be no civilian casualties in Afghanistan. We cannot win the fight against terrorism with airstrikes – this is my first demand of the new president of the United States – to put an end to civilian casualties

Why are so many of our “surgical” strikes going so terribly wrong?
    By Tom EngelhardtDECEMBER 20, 2013

They weren't ' going wrong ' at all. Some bomb-happy fuckers wanted to kill 'ragheads'. How do we know ? Julian Assange and Wikileaks exposed the mentality behind it, with videos. He's still in an English dungeon waiting for one-sided extradition proceedings to hand him over to American torturers.

Oh, I know, there are no such people, eh . Get real.
