Residents in one Florida county are being asked to "consider other options" before calling 911

Officials in Brevard County, on Florida's east coast, are urging residents to "consider other options before taxing ambulance services with non-emergency calls and showing up at the ER for a COVID test when other test sites are available," according to its emergency management office.

All three of the county's hospital systems are already over capacity and have had to implement surge plans that involve canceling elective procedures and converting regular rooms into COVID-19 spaces, said Brevard County Emergency Director John Scott.

Statewide, 90% of Florida's intensive care beds are full.

Arkansas set a new state record for hospitalizations

The state reported 1,376 new hospitalizations on Monday, surpassing a record it set in January. Health officials said there were just eight intensive care unit beds available in the entire state.

The State Of Arkansas Has Only 8 Empty ICU Beds, As COVID-19 Cases Resurge.

Dr. Cam Patterson, chancellor of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, told NPR's Debbie Elliott yesterday that the average COVID-19 patient was over 60 a year ago, but is now 40. Some 20% of the medical center's patients have been pregnant moms, he added.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Alaska’s largest hospital has begun rationing care, saying it has been overwhelmed by COVID-19 patients.

Providence Alaska Medical Center said Tuesday it will prioritize resources and treatment to those patients who have the potential to benefit the most.

Dr. Kristen Solana Walkinshaw is chief of staff at the hospital and says that “we are no longer able to provide the standard of care to each and every patient who needs our help,”

    ...

Providence is one of only three hospitals in Anchorage, a city of 300,000 people. Walkinshaw says Providence’s emergency room is overflowing and patients have to wait for hours in their cars to see a doctor for emergency care.

COVID-19 surge forces health care rationing in parts of West

"BOISE, Idaho (AP) — In another ominous sign about the spread of the delta variant, Idaho public health leaders on Thursday expanded health care rationing statewide and individual hospital systems in Alaska and Montana have enacted similar crisis standards amid a spike in the number of unvaccinated COVID-19 patients requiring hospitalization.

The decisions marked an escalation of the pandemic in several Western states struggling to convince skeptical people to get vaccinated.

The Idaho Department of Health and Welfare made the announcement after St. Luke’s Health System, Idaho’s largest hospital network, asked state health leaders to allow “crisis standards of care” because the increase in COVID-19 patients has exhausted the state’s medical resources.

Idaho is one of the least vaccinated U.S. states, with only about 40% of its residents fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

Crisis care standards mean that scarce resources such as ICU beds will be allotted to the patients most likely to survive. Other patients will be treated with less effective methods or, in dire cases, given pain relief and other palliative care. "

"One of the Tri-Cities’ well-known business leaders and philanthropists spent two days in a North Idaho hospital’s emergency room waiting for a bed in an intensive care unit, says his family.

Bob Ferguson was vacationing near Sandpoint when he had a serious stroke, said his daughters, Cathie Kolinski of Chicago and Colleen Ferguson Lowry of Portland.

Ferguson, 88, was the deputy assistant secretary of nuclear programs for the Department of Energy and chief executive for the Washington Public Power Supply System. He then founded and developed Tri-Cities area companies focused on nuclear waste management, environmental consulting and nuclear safety training.

After a stroke on Aug. 25 he was initially taken to a small Idaho hospital that lacked a neurosurgeon to provide the care he needed.

There the search started, scouring the Northwest, including in the Tri-Cities, for a hospital with a critical care bed available.

Within a couple hours he was flown by helicopter to a larger hospital in Idaho, where his wait for an ICU bed continued, his daughters said.

The experience left them frustrated and angry with people who do not get a COVID-19 vaccination.

ICU beds were filled with COVID-19 patients, almost all of whom were not vaccinated against COVID, his daughters were told."

It is remarkable how selfish the vaccine hold-outs are.

Hospital ICU beds are nearing and exceeding capacity because they are all full of unvaccinated COVID patients.

    Look at that story above.

The ICU rooms were designed for one bed. They have already doubled the capacity of the hospital by putting a second bed in each room.

And now they are running out of space again, but the critical unvaccinated COVID patients just keep coming.

They can't keep doing this because beds are not the only limiting factor. There are only so many doctors and nurses and other health care workers. Even if there were more beds, who is going to do all the work to treat the patients?

They are getting to the point where they have to make life and death decisions. Some people in critical condition are going to be simply injected with pain killer and left to die. There are not enough resources to try to save them.. Hospitals are going to have to decide between helping one person or another based on nothing more than the chances of survival. Once a hospital is overwhelmed to the point of 'crisis standards of care,' they are unable to do everything possible to treat all the people to the best of their ability because there are simply too many people to try to treat, and not enough health care workers to do all the work. That's what it is coming down to in these rural places where so many anti-vax Republicans and Trump fans refuse to get inoculated.

They ALL think it won't happen to them - until it does.

And then, when they realized they messed up big time, for keeps, and wish they had gotten vaccinated, it's too late for that.

It is getting very real. People are dying needlessly.

Health care workers are getting so tired of this.

And so are the rest of us.

    We want the pandemic done.

Vaccine hold-outs are making the pandemic last longer.

    Please.

If you have not gotten vaccinated, please get yourself signed up. Do it.

It's not going to hurt you. The Pfizer vaccine is fully approved. You are not being a guinea pig. Millions of Americans have already gotten this vaccine with no problems. They are fine and they are protected in the best way possible. There is nothing experimental about it any more. And it is free. You're not afraid of a tiny little shot, are you?

Be a part of the solution. Join the rest of America in fighting this enemy. Uncle Sam needs YOU.
