John Oliver had an interesting segment on his show about the cost of for profit healthcare transportation, that would give anyone a heart attack, before they even get to the unaffordable hospitals.

In early February, Rick Santoro, 60, was at an orthopedist’s office for a small procedure, an injection in his knee. Afterward, he passed out, but once he regained consciousness, he continued to feel ill.

His doctor suggested he go to the emergency room, and Santoro, uncertain why he was having issues, agreed.
An ambulance took him two miles to the nearest hospital, and a few weeks later, the bill arrived.

After receiving a two-mile transport in February, Santoro experienced sticker shock: His ride added up to $2,691.50. Though insurance covered most of it, Santoro had to pay $770.30 out of pocket, and he wondered if that was right. The bulk of the bill resulted from the fact he hadn’t yet hit his annual deductible, but it still seemed pricey, he said, given the brief care he received.

The short ride cost more than the subsequent emergency room visit, which he estimates lasted about two and a half hours. That bill was $200.
I am recovering from a quadricep tendon tear that took part of my kneecap with it. It happened in September of last year and full recovery is 12-18 months. So far I have been out close to $9,000 all coming out of my HSA but even at that price, it is still better than a universal health plan that would cost me greater than .50 on every dollar made when combined with existing taxes.

    What a fucking moron.

According to KFF's 2018 Employer Health Benefits Survey, the average worker pays $5,547 in premiums and $1,573 in deductibles for a total of $7,120. The HH median income in the country is $61,000. So right now, the average worker pays 12% of their income for health care ($7,120/$61,000 = 11.6%).

Likewise, the average business pays $15,000 per employee to provide coverage. For a business of 50 employees, that is $750,000. The average income for a "small business" (<50 employees) is just $73,000, according to PayScale.

Bernie's M4A plan's payroll tax rate sets a 4% tax on income for workers, and 7.5% tax on income for businesses.

    So doing some simple math:

Under the current system, the average worker pays 11.6% of their income, or $7,120 for health care.
If taxed at 4% as proposed, the average worker pays 4% of their income, or $2,440 for health care, saving $4,680 a year.

Under the current system, the average small business of 50 employees pays $750,000 to provide coverage ($15K/worker x 50 workers).
If taxed at 7.5% as proposed, the average small business of 50 employees pays just $5,475 to provide coverage for all its workers, saving $744,525.

What are you personally willing to do about it?

True leaders are not negative people. To win influence, you have to remain positive and speak positively!

You have to express what it is is that you actually want, and you have to tell them why you think that is important, AND HOW YOU ARE GOING TO PAY FOR IT!

Over a million Americans engage in Medical Tourism. They save a lot of money going abroad for health care.
The cost of healthcare paid by corporations is your money. That could be in your salary instead of wasted on healthcare. Those thousands of dollars going into your healthcare is not free. It is your money.

so then,, who pays the doctor bills if neither the employee or employer have to pay for them?.....

When a study sets out to measure how well socialized medicine systems work, of course the US fairs poorly because their system isn't socialized...

You're paying them with your taxes, idiot.

You're just not paying as much as you did with private insurance companies and chargemasters.

Right...so we should socialize it so that it doesn't continue to fail.

    Bingo! Bang! Boom!

I've read the whole thread and this is the best ... and most accurate comment yet.

    Socialized medicine...

So, you are having trouble with your knee. Looks like you have a partial tear of your anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). You're going to need surgery to repair it. Are you an athlete? A member of the Olympic National Team? An important politicians relative? No? OK, come back and see us when you can't walk anymore.

Hyperbole? Maybe a little, but not far from the reality of it.

The one's who can afford it come here because it's one of the last free market health care systems where people can get things done when they want them done.

I might put air quotes around free market when it comes to our health care system but that aside your point is spot on.

The Canadians I know laugh at our healthcare and think I am nuts when I suggest they would rather have ours.
They fucking do not. We have millions escape to foreign countries for healthcare. I know several people who did it.
I have been in Detroit area my whole life and many, many Americans have gone to Windsor for drugs and treatment, They were way ahead of us in eye surgery and hernia surgery. You can but drugs for a fraction of our costs.
America has great health treatment for the super-rich. That does not filter down.
Tommy Douglas is the most revered politician in any Canadian polls. He is the guy who started their healthcare system.
    Do tou know anything ever?
