Default Treasury Department must hand over Trump tax information to House committee

The Justice Department's Office of Legal Counsel has determined the Treasury Department must hand over former President Donald Trump's tax returns to the House Ways and Means Committee.

The opinion, posted Friday, says that while the committee "cannot compel the Executive Branch to disclose [tax information] without satisfying the constitutional requirement that the information could serve a legitimate legislative purpose," the Ways and Means Committee in this instance '"invoked sufficient reasons for requesting the former President's tax information."

What was the committee's reason(s), we want to see Trump's tax returns...?

Not Congress' issue as it isn't a "legislative purpose." That's the IRS's job...

So Trump should not have to pay any taxes if he so chooses.

Hate to say it, but who cares, we pretty much all know now that Trump skirts and manipulates tax laws as much as he and his army of accountants and attorneys can, if anything blatantly illegal arises the NY AG will catch it, they have had the returns for a couple of months now

Trump should pay the taxes he owes according to the same 74,000+ pages of laws and regulations you and I use to pay the taxes we owe.

The IRS can audit anyone they feel needs being audited, and Trump is one of those that automatically gets audited each year. So, what can Congress find that the experts at the IRS didn't?

No problem, lets revert back to the tax rates of the 1950's before all those "pages of federal tax codes," when the upper income brackets paid sixty percent

Other than Trump saying it, how do you know "Trump is one of those that automatically gets audited each year?" And as we have discovered from recent studies, the IRS more than often than not does not audit high income earners because they lack the resources (https://www.gq.com/story/no-irs-audits-for-the-rich) nor can afford to take on those with an army of accountants and attorneys at the ready (https://www.propublica.org/article/i...-top-1-percent)

An audit doesn't have to be done in person. The IRS can audit a return simply by assigning an agent to go through the filed forms and double check them as starters.

You aren't naïve enough to think that an individual as Trump with his army of accountants and attorneys files a several page tax return are you? Like some agent is going to sit down with a pencil and hand calculator and go thru the return?

As I noted, "from recent studies, the IRS more than often than not does not audit high income earners because they lack the resources nor can afford to take on those with an army of accountants and attorneys at the ready
