Elite colleges generally accept two groups of students.

Those with good grades and having punched all the necessary tickets to get in (including playing the race and gender cards if they have those). That doesn't mean they're particularly smart, just adept at fitting in.

The second group are those that are monied elites. Doesn't matter if these kids are dumber than dirt, that half million their folks coughed up in endowments was more than enough to make room for them at a college.
