Default New York is now the sixth state to ban child marriage

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed legislation this week raising the age of consent to be married in the state to 18, banning all minors from being married.

New York is just the sixth state in the country to ban marriages involving a minor.

Rhode Island Gov. Daniel McKee signed legislation last month barring marriages by anyone under 18. Delaware, Minnesota, New Jersey and Pennsylvania all ban minors from marrying.

It is 2020, and we are still just starting to outlaw child brides... Just sad.

I am certain you would not be born if the laws were different. Or against inbreeding. Just saying.

My parents waited until they had graduate degrees before marrying. No inbreeding in my family. You are probably just assuming about my family based on your own.

18 is considered an adult. The age of consent can be lower but most states recognize 18 for voting, criminal prosecution, marriage, etc.

Pelosi wanted to give 16 year olds the vote. Doesn't it make sense to lower everything to that age using her logic? LOL

The House rejected a liberal lawmaker’s proposal to lower the voting age to 16 years old for congressional and presidential elections, in a vote that exposed divisions among Democrats over how far to go in expanding the franchise to more people.

The measure from Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D., Mass.), one of the most progressive members of the House, drew 125 in favor to 302 against. No Republicans supported the measure, which was part of a larger, sweeping voting-rights package set to be voted on later in the day. Currently, citizens 18 years and older have the right to vote.

According to your article, Pelosi rejected dropping the voting age to 16. There are some good arguments for lowering the voting age, but there are also good arguments for Pelosi's side.

Using the logic of progressively getting more adult rights, and obligations, there should not be a single age that everything happens.

    Thanks for the Pelosi correction.

I'd favor raising the age. Humans don't fully mature until age 25. 18 to 25 year olds often get into trouble for making bad, sometimes life-altering, decisions.

Apparently not enough of them since only 125 Democrats voted for it and 93 against. I'm glad it failed. Better to raise the age IMO

    https://www.nationalreview.com/news/...er-voting-age/
The measure brought by Representatives Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts, Grace Meng of New York, and Jan Schakowsky of Illinois failed in a 125-302 vote, with 125 Democrats voting in favor of the amendment and 93 Democrats voting against it, according to C-SPAN.

How should I deal with my spouse’s unkind words, mind games, and put-downs? This has been a problem for most of our marriage. I’ve never been physically hurt, but the constant verbal and emotional abuse has made my life miserable. Some of my friends say I should get a divorce, but others say I should “submit” to my husband and and love him no matter what.
