My examples are pretty easy to explain with science. How does carrying a gun reduce your risk of being attacked if the attacker is not aware of your gun? The opposite may be true if carrying a gun makes a person act in ways that increase their risk. I know of no study that points to one direction or the other. Anecdotal evidence is not proof of much of anything. We do know that having a gun in the home increases the risk of death both by suicide and accident.
