High speed fail is exactly that in the US. It makes no sense for a really large nation unless you have very dense population areas. It might work in very limited areas on the East Coast, but that's about it. Anywhere else it's pretty much a massive, expensive, loser.
Los Angeles to San Francisco is only hundreds of miles, the problems building it are mostly political and legal not technical. The distance is less than 400 miles, the answer is too many lawyers.
