Target, Walgreens make drastic changes due to increase in San Francisco thefts

According to the California Retailer's Association three cities in our state are among the top 10 in the country when it comes to organized retail crime--Los Angeles, San Francisco and Sacramento.

Already we are seeing the negative impact it is having in San Francisco with stores permanently shutting down or closing early. It has become one of the most pressing issues in our city today.

Target has now acknowledged that they have decided to close some stores early because of the escalating retail crime.

For more than a month, we've been experiencing a significant and alarming rise in theft and security incidents at our San Francisco Stores, similar to reports from other retailers in the area.

Target isn't the only store in San Francisco to make changes because of the continuous shoplifting. After 10 p.m. the 7-Eleven on Drumm St. in the Financial District only does business through a metal door. But first you have to ring the bell to let them know you're outside.

"This window was installed like two to three months ago because it was not safe. Sometimes they would break that glass of the door," explained Manager Bobby Singh.

Walgreens has already closed several stores for the same reason and security guards like Kevin Greathouse are told not to physically engage with those shoplifting. He says people shoplifting have, at times, threatened him with a knife.

"I don't have any intention of getting stabbed for $600 worth of stuff," he added.

San Francisco police Lt. Tracy McCray said, “I’m used to it,” McCray continued. “I mean, we can have a greatest hits compilation of people just walking in and cleaning out the store shelves and security guards, the people who work there, just standing by helplessly because they can’t do anything.”

Cops and prosecutors are at odds over Proposition 47, a 2014 referendum that lowered the penalty for stealing goods worth less than $950 from a felony to a misdemeanor.

A Las Cruces man in the country illegally is accused of decapitating another man at Apodaca Park was indicted by a grand jury.

Police said Joel Arciniega-Saenz, 25, decapitated another man and kicked his head around like a soccer ball on June 21. Arciniega-Saenz was out of jail on an unsecured bond prior to the alleged murder.

Arciniega-Saenz was indicted on charges of first-degree murder; he was also scheduled for a pre-trial detention hearing on Tuesday, however, his defense attorney asked for a continuance.

On the day Chicago’s top cop touted declining crime numbers, the city was hit with one of its most violent days of the year: four killed, 28 wounded, including three young children who were seriously injured.

A 1-month-old was shot in the head in a mass shooting in Englewood, scene of another mass shooting weeks ago that killed five people and wounded three others.

An 8-year-old girl was shot in the arm as she sat in her home in Roseland. Two women on the porch were also shot and one of them died.

A 9-year-old girl was shot in the head as she sat in a car in Grand Crossing. A Chicago police officer drove her to the hospital, where relatives asked why authorities can’t do more to protect children.

Police Supt. David Brown was asked the same question by a reporter as he held a news conference around the time the 9-year-old was shot. Brown had been talking about new statistics which the department said showed crime is going down in Chicago.

As he has repeatedly done in the past, the superintendent answered by blaming the proliferation of guns.

Mayor Lori Lightfoot accused her political nemesis — indicted Ald. Edward Burke (14th) — and "his minions" of orchestrating the shootings to "create chaos."

Khaled Awad, 24, allegedly approached Rabbi Shlomo Noginski with a gun and demanded his car keys, at which point Noginski ran across the street to a park, where Awad stabbed him multiple times.

He entered the United States two years ago, but his legal status recently lapsed.

"Khaled Awad, 24, a citizen of Egypt, entered the United States on a student visa in August 2019," a spokesman for ICE said. "However, he failed to stay enrolled as required by law, resulting in a loss of legal status in the U.S on May 14, 2021."


Suffolk County District Attorney Rachael Rollins said her office has launched an investigation into the case but it has not been labeled a hate crime.
