I remember hearing about that film
Never saw it
A friend or lover that you have not seen or heard from in 20 years and you know nothing of their current life.....are you happy to hear from them?
I watched Broken Flowers yesterday, and am thinking of old friends that I have not been in contact with for 20-30 years.

The bottom line is that conservatives cant admit to themselves the Evil they have allowed to romp on their watch.
This is going to hurt.
Over the years I have made a few attempts to reach out to people who were important in my life who I found by way of the internet....I cant claim that this ever turned out well....I stopped doing this many years ago.

They would be strangers. So, while it would be interesting to hear from them, I wouldn't call it "happy". Like the movie, there are few areas where I'd like to go back and apologize or at least admit I was in error, an ass, selfish, etc. but in the end it doesn't matter. What was was and what is is.
Sometimes I do wonder how we would know if what happened was for the best?
There's the oft-told story of the bomber crew member who was sick and couldn't go on a mission so a replacement went and everyone dies. "That could have been me" is the common phrase. I disagree and think that maybe it wouldn't have happened if they did go or that the plane crashes, but most or all survive. The dynamics change moment to moment like the Butterfly Effect. Who knows the impact of each moment?
Best, IMO, is just to do one's best, hope for the best but plan for the worst. One of my favorite Zen stories, there are longer versions: https://thedailyzen.org/2015/03/20/zen-story-maybe/
