So imagine if a gas canister was accidently detonated outside the window of my building. But I REFUSE to close the window, and as a result everyone in the building dies. Yep, and those are two different issues. There is a principle in law called mitigation of damages. If someone breaks your window, they're responsible for replacing the window. If you fail to replace the window and you end up with massive water damage in a storm a few weeks later, that's on YOU.
