I totally agree, evince.
I believe that basic human respect must be forfeited, not earned,
and I respect EVERYBODY who hasn't forfeited his/her respect with malfeasance.
That's most people, thankfully, regardless of race or ethnicity [people, not trumpanzees].
Affording people their fundamental human respect is something a decent person does,
but it's not necessarily the same as identifying with or even understanding all of their cultural traits.
You're right about personal relationships.
The black people with whom I've hung out over the years were pretty much like me in every way but melanin.
They weren't particularly Afro-centric in their likes and demeanor. They were named Bill or Archie, not Trayvon.
That certainly doesn't mean that I hate the African Americans who are more Afro-centric.
It probably means that I don't understand them, though.
