Florida adopted a new rule Thursday to prevent public schools from teaching critical race theory, a push led by Gov. Ron DeSantis as a way to prevent history that would “denigrate the Founding Fathers” from being taught in state classrooms.

DeSantis, following a national conservative playbook, said he wanted to prevent instructors from “teaching kids to hate their country.”

It’s an effort to white-wash, cover-up and candy coat history,” said Ben Frazier, president of the Northside Coalition of Jacksonville. “Allow teachers to speak the truth.”

The governor, speaking via a video connection, told the State Board of Education that he does not want to stop children from learning about slavery or the civil rights movement, only to make sure they don’t hear “narratives that are not grounded in facts.” He wants to prevent, he has said, students from learning a “false history,” where they “look back and denigrate the Founding Fathers, denigrate the American Revolution.”

In his short address, he offered no instances where Florida teachers had offered inaccurate history lessons but cited problems in schools in Arizona and New York.

The board voted on the rule after hearing from the governor and more than 30 speakers. Florida is among more than a dozen Republican-led states seeking this year to ban critical race theory from its schools.

Critical race theory, initially a legal framework that examined how racism impacted the country’s institutions, is not a topic taught in Florida’s public schools, nor was it mentioned explicitly in the initial proposed rule, though DeSantis said it would block its teaching.

    AWESOME.

CRT doesn't acknowledge or provide history on anything. It is, in simple terms, a framework based on classic Marxism and Marxist theory to turn the subject of race into a class struggle. It is by design incredibly racist because it has to be to create the divisions by class necessary to in turn create conflict in society. What CRT uses to do this is a combination of cherry picked history like the Greenville riot, fiction / lies like the 1619 Project, and propaganda meant to create racial conflict. The end purpose of CRT is to deconstruct society so that a new Communist society can be formed out of the ashes.

Critical Legal Theory, Critical Theory, Critical Pedagogy, and other critical theories of the far, radical, violent Left in education aim to do the same thing. They are all pure bullshit meant to divide and create hatred and envy. They tear down everything and build nothing. America doesn't need any of that crap invading our classrooms or our nation.

This is, indeed, the American version of the Chinese Cultural Revolution.”

Given one minute to speak, the Chinese woman wasted no time getting to the point. “I’ve been very alarmed by what’s going on in our schools. You are now training our children to be social justice warriors and to loathe our country and our history. Growing up in Mao’s China, all of this seems very familiar. The Communist regime used the same critical theory to divide people; the only difference is they used class instead of race.”

“During the Cultural Revolution, I witnessed students and teachers turn against each other,” she recalled. “We changed school names to be politically correct. We were taught to denounce our heritage. The Red Guards destroyed anything that is not Communist: old statues, books, and anything else.”

She pointed out that in China during the Cultural Revolution, students were also encouraged to report on each other: “We were also encouraged to report on each other, just like the Student Equity Ambassador program and the Bias Reporting System.”

She concluded, “This is, indeed, the American version of the Chinese Cultural Revolution. The Critical Race Theory has its roots in cultural Marxism. It should have no place in our schools.”

I have no problem with this law.

Everyone knows about slavery, Jim Crow, segregation and the civil rights movement.

The rest of it is just agenda pushing and trying to foment more white guilt.

People are getting weary of it.

I think a lot of CRT is crap. If they started doing in my young daughter's class what they are doing elsewhere I'd pull her out of the school. I'm not having her sit through that.

And, for example, you have schools like KIPP which changed its motto last year away from 'Work Hard, Be Nice' because it diminishes the significant effort to dismantle systemic racism, places value on being compliant and submissive, supports the illusion of meritocracy, and does not align with our vision of students being free to create the future they want.

To me that is the definition of soft bigotry of low expectations, if not worse.

But I have concerns about banning CRT. I have worries about the unintended consequences of banning things (what might we want to ban in the future?). There is an element of vagueness in the legislation. I don't want it taught as it's currently being used in classrooms but the libertarian in me doesn't like the legislation.

They could make it optional, I suppose.

Parents could have the choice of allowing their kids to be taught that or some other social studies related course.

The number of kids in one vs the other would be an accurate gauge of what the public view is.

Buzzwords and labels are no substitute for TRUTH, and ONLY the weak-minded fear them or even use them. You know, like people who ‘believe’ that Trump won the election. Surely you must be such a person. People such as that have so standing in serious adult conversation and you demonstrate why you have no standing.

“Critical theories are meant to divide this nation” .. you mean divide it more than you and the rest of the trump won the election traitors already have???

Are you of the opinion that objection to critical thought keeps it from growing?

AMERICAN HISTORY ITSELF IS A TESTAMENT TO THE STRENGTH AND RESILIENCE OF AFRICAN PEOPLE. WE, ALONG WITH THE COURGE AND SACRIFICES OF CONSCIOUS WHITE AMERICANS, LIKE VIOLA LIUZZO, EVERETT DIRKSEN, AND MANY OTHERS, HAVE FOUGHT AND DIED TOGETHER FOR OUR FREEDOM, AND FOR OUR SURVIVAL.

In America, rights are are not determined by what is just, fair, equitable, honest, nor by what Jesus would do. Rights are determined ONLY by what you can DEMAND.

Do you believe that your objection to society keeps your daughter SEPERATE from it?

The students, faculty, and community love and support KIPP, even though it doesn’t measure up to some white guy from the west coast with no connection or real concern for the aspirations of the students.

Has it ever dawned on you that your way may not be the best, or only way? Or even make sense?
