So the Canadians have gone back to shipping their tar sand oil by rail, like this:

Pipelines are safer, more environmentally friendly, and cheaper to operate. But the tards on the environmental Left can't get that through their pointy little heads...

Canadian refiners haven't invested in coking plants to prepare tar sand oil for refining. That's why it's going to the US to begin with. The US has about 60% of refineries with coking capacity. There is some movement in Canada towards adding this capacity to their plants but it isn't yet in place.

Yes it does, along with other petroleum products after it is coked to allow it to be refined.

That nasty sludge is most often used for diesel/kerosene/heating oil related products. It's not as profitable to refine it into gasoline as it is with lighter crudes.

Still, Canada imports better quality crude for gasoline production in their own refineries. Bitumen is filthy, and isn't nearly as desirable as conventional crude.

True, but you can make gasoline from it. Part of the reason the US has capacity for refining it is Venezuelan crude was sometimes refined. It's very heavy too and requires coking.

About one third of Alberta bitumen is turned into SCO as this article points out.

Upgrading is a process by which bitumen is transformed into light/sweet synthetic crude oil (SCO) by fractionation and chemical treatment, removing virtually all traces of sulphur and heavy metals. About one-third of Alberta's bitumen is upgraded into SCO before being sold to downstream refineries.

This, combined with the non-renewal of drilling leases will lead to a gas shortage in the US before summer is over.

AKA Carter-era gas lines around the block.
The Trans Mountain pipeline expansion project to Vancouver is due to be completed next year. This will increase capacity to 900,000 barrels a day for export to Asia.

But might be beneficial to the US northeast in wintertime.

Diesel engines provide more miles per gallon than gasoline engines do in the same vehicles .

Except that it's being refined by multi national corporations for sale on the open market. Nothing is designated to stay in this country. Not even our own fracked products.

Yes. My point is that there is plenty of quality crude to be refined for gasoline. The claim on the table is that we're going to see gasoline shortages because of the shut down of KXL.

Which has what to do with 'gasoline shortages'?
