Sex smell lures 'vampire' to doom

    By Richard Black
    Environment correspondent, BBC News website

A synthetic "chemical sex smell" could help rid North America's Great Lakes of a devastating pest, scientists say.

US researchers deployed a laboratory version of a male sea lamprey pheromone to trick ovulating females into swimming upstream into traps.

The sea lamprey, sometimes dubbed the "vampire fish", has parasitised native species of the Great Lakes since its accidental introduction in the 1800s.

The work is reported in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Excellence is an art won by training and habituation. We do not act rightly because we have virtue or excellence, but rather we have those because we have acted rightly. We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit.

Believe nothing on the faith of traditions, even though they have been held in honor for many generations and in diverse places. Do not believe a thing because many people speak of it. Do not believe on the faith of the sages of the past. Do not believe what you yourself have imagined, persuading yourself that a God inspires you. Believe nothing on the sole authority of your masters and priests. After examination, believe what you yourself have tested and found to be reasonable, and conform your conduct thereto.

Me too, unfortunately. How come they love you? You smoke -- the smoke is supposed to keep them away! That's the only thing that sort of tempts me to take up smoking, but I get over it. It's a complication being allergic to scents, because I always have to look for fragrance free products. Cutter makes a good one that's very effective and works for me.

Yes I smoke and they still love me. DEET is my friend in warm weather. I have a screen enclousure over my pool so the little suckers do not suck me dry.
