We seem to be getting off track here. If two posters feel the need to engage in a 'no, you are' repartee, please do it in another place. Thanks. OP below is a bit dated but covers how Fox became propaganda and not news.

"Fear, in fact, is precisely what Ailes is selling: His network has relentlessly hyped phantom menaces like the planned 'terror mosque' near Ground Zero, inspiring Florida pastor Terry Jones to torch the Koran. Privately, Murdoch is as impressed by Ailes' business savvy as he is dismissive of his extremist politics. 'You know Roger is crazy,'' Murdoch recently told a colleague, shaking his head in disbelief. 'He really believes that stuff.'

To watch even a day of Fox News – the anger, the bombast, the virulent paranoid streak, the unending appeals to white resentment, the reporting that's held to the same standard of evidence as a late-*October attack ad – is to see a refraction of its founder, one of the most skilled and fearsome operatives in the history of the Republican Party...."

A simple answer to the question of whether or not specific news outlets are a threat to Democracy is, yes, they are. Specifically, the TV broadcasts and specific hosts like Tucker Carlson who dishonesty spread disinformation and sow distrust.

Watching Newsmax or OAN reminds me so much of RT. Oddly even RT seems more balanced so long as the story stays far from critical of Russia's leaders. For the reader Peter Pomerantsev's 'Nothing is True and Everything is Possible'. It is world hard to comprehend in many ways, but a world we see today in America with the republicans and many of the wealthy.

Yesterday I had to turn to Fox OAN Newsmax to check out how they were praising Pres Joe Biden best job stats in fifty years. But what are they showing? A Chinese balloon and making all sort of ridiculous comments as is their usual fair. One wonders if they have ever used Google maps or thought of all the satellites circling the earth? No, of course not, they are propaganda tools for the easily played. Too funny.

'...Newsmax Reporter Asks If Biden Is "Woke" | The Daily Show'

'Sarah Silverman called Newsmax “basically an even more far-right Fox News — like if your crazy uncle had a crazy uncle.”

Woke is a modern pejorative, how did that happen, for many it has no meaning outside the negative. It is the N word, the J word, the S word, the H word, etc etc revised. Or is that revisited. No need to think, just call it woke. Bill Maher delivers a diatribe recently that compared it to the very thing it opposes with no obvious irony. DeSantis uses it often and being an autocrat, it fits him well - name call - don't think. It comes out of the far right republican (so called) conservatives need to deny change, stop progress, or exclude the other. Why ponder, why consider, why learn, when you can label. Why acknowledge difference. Fox and other so called conservative networks like Newsmax and OAN use it often for it fits much of their audience and they must play along for the audience. You'd think humans would recognize by now the evil labeling creates but no, labels still work.

Fear-mongering is the lowest form of politics and also the most common. “Woke” is no more than “civil rights” which many on JPP knew from the 1960s.

IMO, Democrats should stop using the word and simply use the Constitution and the term “Equal Protection Clause”. If Democrats stop using the word, the Republicans will have nothing to play off of in their fear-mongering.

(D)s hardly ever use "woke" though, except when countering it as an epithet tossed at us by the RW. It's taken the place of their former pejoratives "liberal" and "PC."

I for one am grateful that they finally happened upon a new one. "Commie" and "socialist" were so overused.

Trumpers constantly whine about how the “MSM” is pushing the narrative yet they are the most guilty of letting Fox News, Newsmax and OANN drive their own narrative.

They moved away three years, but we used to have neighbors who got their "news" exclusively from Fox. In fact, whenever we visited with them they were either watching Fox or the Hallmark Channel. The guy would occasionally make odd statements like "coal isn't harmful to the environment and is cheaper than natural gas," "illegals are swarming all of our borders" (their son works for the Border Patrol at the Canadian border), and so on. We tried to stay far away from politics with them, but one time Mr. Owl had had enough, I guess. The lady had gone back to Germany to visit her folks so we had him over for supper. He was going on and on about coal is good and cheaper than NG, so Mr. Owl hauled out his computer and showed him the actual data. He seemed almost shocked to discover that the opposite was true. He had really believed that the decommissioning of our local coal-burning electric generating facilities and the conversion to NG-power plants was some dastardly liberal plot, in league with those Green ppl.

Sadly, fear and ignorance have replaced the Constitution and American ideals in the Republican Party.

But hey, as long as those things keep them in power, it's all good from their POV.

There will always be selfish, malicious people in the world, but what’s most disturbing to me is how many people buy into them.
