Default General Board Discussion - Is Memorial Day outmoded?

Memorial Day began as “Decoration Day,” when, after the DEMOCRAT insurrection of 1861, families and friends of both loyal American and insurrectionist war dead honored those who were killed by decorating their graves.

Naturally, the DEMOCRAT insurrectionists mourned and celebrated their own fallen "Confederates" while they continued their rebellion against the election results of 1860 and fought to preserve racism in the insurrectionist DEMOCRAT-dominated territories, which were finally subdued and conquered by Republicans by 1865.

By 1890, every state that had sacrificed lives and treasure to suppress the DEMOCRAT insurrection of 1861 had formally adopted it.

In 1968, Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act of 1968, which changed Memorial Day from its traditional May 30 date to the last Monday in May, creating a 3-day “holiday weekend.” That sadly changed the purpose of remembrance and trivialized it.

    And now we have this:

The Grand Army of the Republic wanted the holiday to be celebrated on May 30 each year so as to give the flowers time to bloom nationwide.

Congress recognized Decoration Day as a federal holiday in 1938, and for a century it was celebrated on May 30.

In 2010, the American Legion wrote a resolution calling for returning Memorial Day to May 30 so as to make it the somber day it was intended to be and not a reason to enjoy a three-day weekend.

"The majority of Americans view Memorial Day as a time for relaxation and leisure recreation rather than as a solemn occasion and a time to reflect and pay tribute to the American servicemen and women who sacrificed their lives in defense of our Nation," the resolution said.

Americans no longer use Memorial Day to honor Americans' sacrifices in combat, but a day to celebrate "the beginning of summer."

In 1868 John A. Logan, the commander in chief of the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of Union veterans, promoted a national holiday on May 30 “for the purpose of strewing with flowers or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion.”

    A leftist speaks:

"Here comes the Memorial Day weekend, a propaganda opportunity for the System to promote the country’s militarization. The holiday was established following the Civil War, the costliest and deadliest war ever fought on American soil, with some 620,000 of 2.4 million soldiers killed.

Today’s Memorial Day is about recognizing and honoring the men and women who have made the “ultimate sacrifice” for their country.? But is this really the model that we want to hold up to our newer generations? Maybe we should reframe the type of sacrifices we choose to honor. Is it the “ultimate” sacrifice” to be killed somewhere in Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq, or Syria? Why isn’t the ultimate sacrifice choosing to dedicate your life to humanizing the world and overcoming pain and suffering around you? The doctors and nurses during this year of pandemic, the delivery workers who provided food and basic necessities to those stuck at home on lockdown, the scientists who developed the vaccines — they are the ones we should be sending flowers to this weekend.

We might learn from the Columbus Day campaign, which was able to have that holiday renamed Indigenous People’s Day (arguing that Columbus could not ‘discover’ a land that was already inhabited.) Let’s rename Memorial Day as Loving Life Day, in celebration of all the people who have preserved, protected and developed life. Let us bring flowers to the entrance of hospitals, clinics, and labs, and to everyone who is working to preserve life.

In reality, the work that these people are doing is much more important that the work done by any military. Without them I personally would be dead from cancer, my mother dead from heart attack, my friend paralyzed from polio…. everyone knows someone who was saved by medical staff and medicine. Thanks to their efforts and those of their predecessors, in every region of the world today, people can expect to live twice as long as they did just a century ago. These heroes deserve not just a DAY but a week of celebration."

This holiday isn't about politics it is about remembering those who paid the ultimate price fighting in this nations behalf, Be it the civil war, WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, or any other conflicts. So I ask each and every one of you to take off your red or blue hat and just be a thankful American. And remember those who helped give you the freedoms you enjoy.

JPP DEMOCRATS are too busy "enjoying the three day weekend" to ponder history.
