    Default Question about literacy.

In my practice, I often work with and help people who cannot read. Almost always they are older and cannot read, as I generally get to know their families I also see that the children of illiterate people generally can read, and and generally are very poor.

Clearly everyone on this board can read or write or we would not be communicating in this fashion. I am interested in if your parents could read. I suspect almost 100% of us had parents who could read but I am asking because I want to know...

Did anyone have parents who were illiterate? What was your parents education level?

    What about grandparents?

my father had to quit school after the eighth grade to help support his mother.......that being said he was a dedicated reader......we used to go to the library once a month and bring back a large cardboard box with ten to fifteen books in it......he would read for hours every night......he died at 95 but was still reading every day.......

“Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty.”

I feel like USA has something of a caste system, if you want to college it is overwhelmingly likely your parents went to college.

No illiteracy in my family I am aware of.

My mother has a Master's degree in sociology
My father was a concert violinist and graduate of the Paris music conservatory.
My brother has degrees in electrical and chemical engineering.
My grandmother graduated from a medical academy in Saint Petersburg.
My grandfather graduated from a military academy.
My aunt got a degree in Slavic studies.
