The situation is bad enough though. China and the US are both willing to wage total nuclear war over Taiwan.

China's nuclear arsenal is not like the Soviets' was in the 1980s, but China could still do considerable harm if they fired their nukes at us.

I disagree. I think it is important to always insist that our rights never be violated.

Disagreed. Neither China nor the US is insane. China plays the long game, the US not so much.

Were the US and USSR insane during the Cold War? Nuclear war was a real possibility back then.

No since they never launched. Do you think China or the US is insane enough to launch now?

The US and USSR were both willing to launch their nukes in order to protect themselves and their allies. We would have launched nukes to protect West Germany. They would have launched nukes to protect East Germany.

The reason why it never happened was not because of an unwillingness to launch. It was because both sides restrained from actions that would provoke such a launch.

Both the US and China are willing to launch nuclear weapons over Taiwan.

Hopefully both sides will restrain from actions that will provoke the other side into launching.

    Dude, nice theories. Disagreed.

Why do you think the Chinese will launch when the Russians didn't?

The USSR was absolutely willing to launch nuclear weapons.

The US just never provoked them into doing so.

The Chinese are playing the long game. A nuclear exchange is a loser for everyone involved.

Both sides know this to be true.

If by that you mean China will show restraint and not do anything that will provoke a nuclear war, I hope you are right.

First, as I've posted before, the Chinese are in for the long game. Nuclear war is a loser for them and they want to win even if it takes another 50-100 years. The US, OTOH, is a culture of immediate gratification. As a nation, compared to China, we often fail the Marshmallow Test.

The Chinese will certainly push as hard as they can, but if they are "threatening" an invasion of Taiwan, it's only to sucker the US into seeking peace by "compromising" and giving China free rein in the South China Sea.

It's Hardball Negotiation 101: demand something completely ridiculous (in this case Taiwan) and settle for what you want (in this case the undersea resources of the South China Sea). Because the US tends to flunk the Marshmallow Test, and because we elect a new government every four years, US leaders will give China the South China Sea and declare victory at averting nuclear war and saving Taiwan.

The Chinese will be happy to exploit the resources of the South China Sea and put off acquiring Taiwan to later in the 21st century without war.
God bless America and those who defend our Constitution.

There is little chance of that. The US will continue to sail warships there as we please.

Sure we will, but it's under the sea that the Chinese are most interested in exploiting along with the obvious extending their control over what they consider to be a Chinese Lake.

The fucking Russians still do it with the Black Sea. Does anyone really believe the fucking Russians and the US will start WWIII over the Black Sea?

Would Russia Attack the U.S. Navy in the Black Sea?
