    Default Three Charges Explained

The second-degree unintentional murder charge alleged Chauvin caused Floyd's death "without intent" while committing or attempting to commit felony third-degree assault. In turn, third-degree assault is defined as the intentional infliction of substantial bodily harm.

The third-degree murder charge alleged Chauvin caused Floyd's death by "perpetrating an act eminently dangerous to others and evincing a depraved mind, without regard for human life."

The second-degree manslaughter charge alleged Chauvin caused Floyd's death by "culpable negligence whereby the person creates an unreasonable risk, and consciously takes chances of causing death or great bodily harm."

    Around 12.5 to 40 years.

Likely to be 12.5 years concurrently. I am sure each of those charges will be appealed.

How can you be convicted of manslaughter and murder??? That's like convicting someone of doing 30 mph over the speed limit and also 29 and also 28 etc. It's true but it's not fair.
Reckless drivers are a bigger threat to you than all other criminals put together!

No doubt. But his bail is revoked so it looks like he will stay in prison until the appeals run their way through the system. He's probably safer in there anyways. Maybe.

Pretty sure there are plenty of jail guards sympathetic to him.

I have to agree......I don't think I can recall another instance of anyone being sentenced for lesser included offenses......today I heard a reporter asking if he would serve his three sentences consecutively or concurrently.......I said, wtf?......there's only one person dead......you can't convict someone three times for killing one person.......logically he will be sentenced for the most serious offense he was found guilty of....

Actually, prison. Jails are full of crazy people and those not used to the system. In prisons the inmate population has internal rules and a hierarchy of power based on gang affiliations, etc. Having murdered someone isn't a particularly big deal there . What will get you killed or beaten is being a rapist or child molester. Those are considered crimes worthy of punishment even in prison. The other is being affiliated with the wrong gang or set of people.

Depends. Class D felons with 1 year sentence might spend time in jail or minimum security prison.

they might be kept in jail if it was believed they would likely get an early release for good behavior, or were sentenced under a work release program or some sort of dependency counseling.........

Sometimes. Some inmates are even fire fighters within the system, inside and outside.
