Biden’s infrastructure plan will bolster the U.S. semiconductor industry, Commerce Secretary says

The White House’s infrastructure plan will put the U.S. on more equal footing with China as it bolsters the American semiconductor industry, Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo said Wednesday.

“This is about out-competing China,” Raimondo told CNBC’s Jim Cramer in a “Mad Money” interview. “If we act now … we will compete with China. There is time to do that, to rebuild, to build in semiconductors in particular, but we have to get to the business of doing it.”

The comments came moments after President Joe Biden unveiled a $2 trillion package primarily tailored to bridges, roads and other transportation initiatives. The proposal also calls for a $50 billion investment in semiconductor manufacturing and research.

A global chip shortage, heightened by high demand for computers and other technological products during the coronavirus pandemic, has pressured American manufacturers. For instance, Ford announced Wednesday it will reduce car production."

This plan seems like a winner, compared to that lawlessly hacked in freak of nature tRump and his sewer mob's plan to not only destroy Democracy from within but all else related to the advancement of humanity including the semiconductor industry which has global implications.

Fake News. Since Biden is not disbanding the EPA and unions (which is why so much of our electronics left in the first place), nuthin's going to happen. Communism will not bring it back.

Temporarily due to cleaning and sanitizing plants for the so-called "covid19 plague". It has nothing to do with semiconductors. Fake news.

What democracy? The United States never was a democracy. It was organized as a federated republic. The States themselves are each republics. The Democrats do not recognize the Constitution of the United States nor the constitution of any State. They have converted the federal government into an oligarchy to implement fascism and communism.

Intel makes most of its processors in Mexico. Interface chips are typically made in South Korea. Display technologies and their chips primarily come from Japan. Taiwan makes custom chips and stuff related to radio. Currently, Taiwan is currently under threat from Chinese adventurism...getting much worse now under the weak influence from Biden's leadership.

Bring back Western Electric and bolster the vacuum tube industry as well.

The government giving $50 billion to invest in semiconductor manufacture is putting a Band-aid on an amputation. There are reasons semiconductor manufacture has left the US. Among those reasons are:

    1. Too much government regulation of industry, in this case particularly by the EPA.
    2. The cost of labor is uncompetitive.
    3. The cost of infrastructure for manufacture is too high.

Simply put, it is cheaper to make the chips elsewhere so manufacturers do.

As an example of this, back in the 80's Intel was looking to build a new $1 billion + chip plant. At the time, that was about $10 billion today so it represented a huge investment. They were shopping for a location to put the plant and had specific requirements for supporting infrastructure and businesses. The state of California found out that Intel was in the market for this and asked the company why they hadn't heard from them on this project. Intel's rather curt answer was We're not interested in building anything in California... because they knew the cost of land, infrastructure, and environmental regulation would make the plant unprofitable. California had quite literally regulated themselves out of the manufacturing market.

So, what's Joke's doing by dumping money into this industry is artificially enticing manufacturers to temporarily increase their production in the US until the subsidies run out and then they'll leave again. That means either government commits to endlessly subsidizing this industry or the money they put into it results in a very temporary fix to a permanent problem.

Government isn't the solution here, it is the problem.
