Default Why did the US invade Afghanistan?

Twenty years and the US is still in Afghanistan--soon to withdraw.

Bush said the invasion was to capture bin Laden, but Bush let bin Laden go.

Default What did 20 years of western intervention in Afghanistan achieve? Ruination

The longest, most pointless and unsuccessful war that Britain has fought in the past 70 years – its intervention in Afghanistan – is to end in September. I doubt anyone will notice. Nations celebrate victories, not defeats.

Twenty years ago the United States decided to relieve its 9/11 agony not just by blasting Osama bin Laden’s base in the Afghan mountains, but by toppling the entire Afghan regime. This was despite young Taliban moderates declaring Bin Laden an “unwelcome guest” and the regime demanding he leave. The US then decided not just to blast Kabul but invited Nato to launder its action as a matter of global security. Britain had no dog in this fight and only joined because Tony Blair liked George W Bush.

Get bin Laden, destroy al Qaeda, and more so, end Afghanistan as a open haven for terrorist and terrorist training

As a strategy, it is water under the bridge, although it made more sense than invading Iraq, but they did accomplish the first two, the third remains to be seen

    good topic

there is a counter-terrorism strategy / killing terrorists and getting out

there is a counterinsurgency strategy /- basically nation building as well as killing terrorists

Bush/Rumsfeld and that ilk wanted to build democracy (nation building)

‘Enhanced Interrogation’ that were done under Bush led U.S. to bin Laden

“Information provided by KSM and Abu Faraj al-Libbi under Bush about bin Laden’s courier was the lead information that eventually led to the location of [bin Laden’s] compound and the operation that led to his death,”

Ex-CIA Counterterror Chief: ‘Enhanced Interrogation’ Led U.S. to bin Laden

Jose Rodriguez ran the CIA’s Counterterrorism Center from 2002 to 2005, the period when top al-Qaeda leaders Khalid Sheikh Mohammed (KSM) and Abu Faraj al-Libbi were taken into custody and subjected to “enhanced interrogation techniques” (EITs) at secret prisons overseas. KSM was subjected to waterboarding, sleep deprivation and other techniques. Al-Libbi was not waterboarded, but other EITs were used on him.

“Information provided by KSM and Abu Faraj al-Libbi about bin Laden’s courier was the lead information that eventually led to the location of [bin Laden’s] compound and the operation that led to his death,” Rodriguez tells TIME in his first public interview. Rodriguez was cleared of charges in the video-destruction investigation last year.

Bush had bin Laden surrounded and ordered a stand down so he could escape.

Bin Laden was surrounded at Tora Bora. There is evidence that Bush ordered US troops to stand down which allowed bin Laden to escape. Makes sense, bin Laden was much more useful the US alive than dead or capture.

Obama's phony capture and dumping of a body in the ocean perpetuates the fraud.

Twenty years and $1,000,000,000,000 spent for nothing.
