Let us count the ways:
They remind us of the fragility of life
They are harbingers of population control, one day perhaps to be necessary
They are other peoples grief
They show our Second Amendment freedom in action
They stir angry debate, good for the circulation
Most of all, they remind the world that Americans who let this kind of thing go on and on have a dangerous loony streak so you better watch out.

I wouldn't go so far as to say that mass shootings were good for America.
I would instead say that mass shootings are what America is all about.
We've always had them.
We're not the same same dystopic nation without them.
A nation that wasn't totally fucked up wouldn't be the America we know.
Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel. Samuel Johnson, 1775
Religion....is the opiate of the people. Karl Marx, 1848
Freedom's just another word for nothin' left to lose. Kris Kristofferson, 1969

I wouldn't go so far as to say it seriously either, and I would say it's what America is partly about in a small way and destined to get smaller. Guns don't look like it at the moment but they are a future thing of the past.
