Default Jurors shown video at ex-officer’s trial in Floyd’s death

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The video of George Floyd gasping for breath was essentially Exhibit A as the former Minneapolis police officer who pressed his knee on the Black man’s neck went on trial Monday on charges of murder and manslaughter.

Prosecutor Jerry Blackwell showed the jurors the footage at the earliest opportunity, during opening statements, after telling them that the number to remember was 9 minutes, 29 seconds — the amount of time officer Derek Chauvin had Floyd pinned to the pavement last May.

The white officer “didn’t let up” even after a handcuffed Floyd said 27 times that he couldn’t breathe and went limp, Blackwell said in the case that triggered worldwide protests, scattered violence and national soul-searching over racial justice.

“He put his knees upon his neck and his back, grinding and crushing him, until the very breath — no, ladies and gentlemen — until the very life was squeezed out of him,” the prosecutor said.

The prosecutor said the case was “not about split-second decision-making” by a police officer but excessive force against someone who was handcuffed and not resisting.

Blackwell said the Fire Department employee wanted to help but was warned off by Chauvin, who pointed Mace at her.

“She wanted to check on his pulse, check on Mr. Floyd’s well-being,” the prosecutor said. “She did her best to intervene. ... She couldn’t help.”

No doubt our RW friends will now scream that this was prejudicial to the defendant and moan about his not getting a fair trial.

I'm very glad that I'm not on that jury.

That should be the nail in Chauvin’s coffin.

Floyd was handcuffed on the ground on his stomach, he couldn’t get up without assistance if he wanted to.

Dispatcher Who Watched George Floyd's Death in Real Time 'Called Police on the Police': Prosecutor

A 911 dispatcher who testified Monday in the trial of Derek Chauvin said she "was concerned that something might be wrong" as she watched surveillance images of Floyd's detention in real time from afar while the officer "sat on this man."

Scurry said said the length of Floyd's restraint went on for so long as she watched, she asked another whether the "screens had frozen."

She said she brought the use of force to the attention of a police sergeant, after "gut instinct" made her feel that what she was seeing was not normal.

The dispatcher testified that she saw violence by the cops and called a sergeant. She said she never had to do that before.

    That's horrible.

I'm surprised that they didn't fire her for that.

I’m ok with showing the video.

My only criticism would be along the lines of the Big Tech algorithm that says ‘lacks context’.

From what I've been reading the prosecutor plans to show the entire thing including video from officers' body cams.

And some of that evidence claims Floyd had a potentially lethal dose of Fentanyl on board. He complained of shortness of breath while sitting in the squad car. Chauvin’s offense was in not recognizing signs of respiratory distress. The jury has yet to hear that evidence.

There’s definitely a risk of over-charge here and if the jury fails to render ‘the proper verdict’ we all know what comes next. I guess we’ll see how Biden handles that.

Coroner said drugs were not the cause of death.

There isn't any defense for what Chavin did. Whether he was trained to kill Floyd or it was an accident or he murdered that man on purpose, he is accountable. He has to be convicted; and he has to go to prison.

He did. He showed a longer video from a different angle that the public had not seen before today -- uncensored. It was horrific. They apparently have a lot of video. It's not difficult to imagine what would have happened if no one had cameras on their phones.

Both autopsies performed said it was a homicide. They didn’t attribute Floyd’s death to drugs.

I’d never heard of a blood hold till today. I learned something.
