It's sad, but fairly common. JPP has a few more than most forums, but all of the forums I've been on seem to have a higher average age, usually 60s+, than social media platforms.
For shut-ins, especially those who have mobility issues or, more often, memory issues and behind a locked set of double doors, the Internet is their door to the world.
I advise everyone to go visit a memory care unit some time. It's a horror show of aged, semi-comatose people. "New" people who still have some of their wits about them will be horrified at being locked behind doors with a dining room full of zombies. Most I've seen have an open-air courtyard but it's still behind a locked door.
Getting old is a series of lost freedoms. They lose their right to drive, to maintain their own standard of living, the freedom to go where they please, the freedom to own guns, and, worst of all, they know they are losing their minds. It's not a good way to go.
I will be taking an exit strategy if the subject comes up...right after I get a second opinion.

It's a stupid defense. Any idiot knows you don't do something illegal just because someone in authority tells you to. Even the military does not have to follow illegal orders. We rejected that defense at Nuremberg. Because someone "put him up to it" does not require him to act.
