If I may ask when you say minority friends who does that entail? I ask in the context of Lowell High School in San Francisco and all the headlines its been making. It is a school that is only 18% white (and 1/3 of the kids qualify as low income) yet is deemed to lack diversity. The reason being a majority of the students are of Asian decent. Usually when we think of race in America we think of black and white but Asians are often considered minorities as well.
The public/private school is interesting. I think of my experience. I went to a private high school that was at least 50% non white and a good number of working class kids. There were surrounding neighborhoods that had large white (wealthier) populations where acquaintances went to public school. So public school alone doesn't equate to diversity nor do private schools necessarily mean a lack of it.
But I agree that treating people with respect is very important. Now having a young daugther I admit it feels like conflicting information to say we're all God's children and to treat everyone with respect and then having the eventual talk about 'stranger danger' and the need to protect oneself.
