For a year now, the right wing promised us herd immunity was around the corner. It was a lazy reaction to the pandemic. We would not have to do anything, and the pandemic would just stop.
Lets look at a place that is far ahead of us on the path towards herd immunity. Brazil's President says Covid-19 is a hoax. They have made far less of an attempt to stop it than the USA. The biggest city in the Amazon, Manaus, was hardest hit. In April, the city of 2 million was filling mass graves as quickly as they could dig them, but by June, deaths had gone back to pre-pandemic levels. Locals started talking about herd immunity being achieved.
A peer reviewed study entitled "Covid-19 herd immunity in the Brazilian Amazon" said that 76% of the people had immunity, based on tests for antibodies among blood donors. Throughout Brazil there was rejoicing, and even further ignoring of preventative measures. If everyone is immune, why bother with masks?
And now the second wave is hitting. Manaus' hospitals filled up in January. Deaths are almost as high as they were at the highest point, and are continuing to rise. They are digging mass graves as quickly as they can... AGAIN.
What went wrong? Nobody really knows why we cannot seem to get herd immunity with Covid-19, but it is clear that herd immunity is not close. Some theories are:
https://www.economist.com/the-americ...y-it-was-wrongThe reasons for the spike in Manaus are unclear. Perhaps a new variant—identified in 42% of samples collected in December—is more contagious. It could be that existing antibodies offer less protection against the variant, and that some cases are reinfections.
It could be that the study’s methodology is flawed and that 76% was an overestimate. Blood donors are more likely to leave the house, and therefore to get infected, than most people, says Pedro Hallal, an epidemiologist at the Federal University of Pelotas. A nationwide study he co-ordinated, with population samples picked at random, found that just 15% of Manaus residents had antibodies in June. He thinks the preprint’s authors were “not cautious enough” in interpreting their findings.

It evolves
It adapts
And natural immunity is only a couple of months long
Unlike a vaccine
People should wear a mask and observe all protocols
Until the world is done with this
It evolves and adapts
If Africa (example) still has a problem we all still have a problem

Panic! Panic now! Shut it all down! Fuck everybody! Go hide under your bed and cower in fear!
OP is a lying faggot.
You're a real asshole, OP, for trying to fuck people's lives up over something that isn't worth doing so over, k?
Fuck you, you misinformation spreading twatface!
Just to remind everyone, there are places further along on this pandemic than we are... AND THEY HAVE NOT REACHED HERD IMMUNITY!!!

There are some medical research advancements that bring hope that we can trap these Covid Viruses just by the way we are creating vaccines today. As the old Covid 19 virus is being replaced with new strains, Vaccines will be easier now to produce as they just copy and paste the old vaccine with the new updated RNA of the new mutant.
The thing is, after the US does eventually become Herd immune so-to-speak, we must join other nations in helping Vaccinate every corner on our planet- OR IT WILL JUST COME RIGHT BACK TO HAUNT US WITH ALL THE NEW STRAINS. I believe there are already 5 distinctly defined strains of the Covid Virus in the world now, and still counting. These newer strains are becoming easier to catch, which makes them even more deadlier just because of that as more people will be infected with them.
It is going to have to be a World Effort. AND IT WILL BE EXPENSIVE.
But it will cost us more to not vaccinate the entire world.
I think Medical scientists are saying America should be on top of this virus and have it under control by the end of the year, if we can just get most of us vaccinated.
If we can't accomplish that- millions of Americans will eventually die over the next couple of years! AND IT MAY INCLUDE ANY OF YOU PEOPLE- or your loved ones.

MISINFORMATION!
Smallpox and polio were only eradicated due to proper mandated vaccinations- and/or quarantines.
And Polio is a water based virus- not airborne! SO it was much harder to spread. And Smallpox required person to person contact- or contact with bodily fluids such as touching bed sheets or clothing or tableware. SO it was not as easy to spread.
You aren't even talking about the same kind of virus here!

When the polio vaccine was administered they did not ask. They came into schools and lined us up. When you got to the front, you got the vaccine. Polio was eradicated because we did not have rightys crying about the vaccines. The anti-science special cases are doing real damage. I hope they are proud.
