Default Biden chief of staff backs teachers unions refusing to reopen schools,

Chicago Public Schools, the third-largest school district in the nation, wanted around 10,000 kindergarten through eighth-grade teachers and other staffers to return to prepare to welcome roughly 70,000 students back to class on Feb.1.

The union has said the district's safety plan falls short. Coronavirus vaccinations would need to be more widespread and different metrics to measure infections would also need to be implemented before the return of teachers and staff.

In response, the union thanked Biden for his remarks, saying it was "Exactly what educators have been saying."

"Thank you, President Biden. Exactly what educators have been saying, and responses from parents have shown since last March," a union tweet read.

chool officials have argued that remote learning isn't working for all students, including many low income and Black and Latino students who make up the majority of the district. The district's safety plan includes thousands of air purifiers, more cleaning and a voluntary testing program.

"Students in over 130 private and parochial schools and over 2,000 early learning centers across the city have been safely learning in their classrooms since the fall, and we must provide that same option to our families who, through no fault of their own, have been unable to make remote learning work for their children," the district said in a statement over the weekend. "We’ve seen grades, attendance, and enrollment drop significantly for many of our students in recent months, and the impact has been felt most by our Black and Latinx students."

You tell the teachers their fear is irrational and that the *science says* they have nothing to fear.

not really, idiot. teachers have to get close and personal to teach WHEN KIDS ARE PHYSICALLY PRESENT.....most classrooms are cramped, not good ventilation and they are around them for an hour at a time- GET IT, DUMBASS? that is a recipe for infection, dumbass.

This is one thing that makes me want to fight like hell.

A friend of my lost her teen son to suicide because, in her words—he was depressed from being separated from his peers. Her story is hardly unique. This is bullshit. It’s the absolute worst aspect of the collateral damage done to our society by lockdowns and mitigation policy and it needs to stop.

If Biden was any kind of leader he would fire his chief of staff for backing the teachers.

Ok, they have nothing more to fear than any of the rest of us.

Teachers aren’t a special category of citizens that get to stay in a cocoon until it’s all over. They need to get back to work. Paid vacation is over.

I thought of this when people were celebrating Biden announcing some cabinet position for science. Not even science can trump the wishes of the teachers unions.

I keep going back to California and Governor Newsom. All the public schools are shut down but the private school where he sends his kids is open. So either the school doesn't care about the health of the kids and teachers (in which case why is Newsom, who claims to back science, letting his kids go to class then) or are they doing something better than the public schools to make them safer which allows them to open and why can't the public schools do that?
