The first amendment does not apply to private individuals, or even the States. It only applies to the federal government.

See? It applies to Congress. It prevents Congress from passing any law establishing a religion or banning a religion, or abridging free speech in any way, including the press. It also prevents Congress from passing any law barring the people to peacefully assemble (not riot, break windows, loot, pillage, burn, or otherwise damage or vandalize), and to prevent Congress from barring petitions or suing the government.
It does not apply to States. States can have (and have had) state religions, banned religions, have laws concerning slander and libel, mess with the press, and establish rules and limits on gatherings and petitions, if and ONLY if it is in their State constitution to do so. Currently, all State constitutions have similar wording in them now, and no States have state religions.
Of course, today, the SOA (what used to be the federal government) no longer recognizes the Constitution of the United States or the constitution of any State.
