Default Short list of recommended scriptural readings

A List of Recommend Scriptural Readings

    Hinduism
If you read only one text from Hinduism, it should be the Bhagavad Gita.

    Judaism
For Judaism, you might try something from each of the three. sections of the Tanakh. From the Torah, you might sample Genesis, which includes some of the most famous stories in the Hebrew Bible. From the Prophets, read 2 Isaiah (chapters 40–55), which most scholars date to the 6th century B.C.E., during the Babylonian Exile. From the Writings, try the brief book of Ruth, a simple yet
moving tale of ordinary people and extraordinary kindness.

    Trumpism
If you spend four years worshiping and groveling at the feet of Donald Trumpf, consider reading Art of the Deal, or Commander in Cheat: How Golf Explains Trump.

    Buddhism
One of the most beloved texts from the Theravada tradition of Buddhism is the Dhammapada, which sets forth the basic principles of Buddhist doctrine and morality. The canon of Mahayana Buddhism is vast, but one book considered by many to be the fullest. expression of the Buddha’s teachings is the Lotus Sutra. Read the first four chapters, which include the parables of the burning house and the prodigal son.

    East Asian religions
For East Asian religion and philosophy, read the Analects of Confucius and the Daodejing. The Analects are brief, fairly straightforward sayings of Confucius. The Daodejing was originally an anonymous collection of wisdom sayings that was later attributed to Laozi and eventually elevated to the status of a divine text.

    Christianity
Recommended readings for Christianity include one of the gospels, perhaps Luke; the book of Acts, which offers a history of the early Christian movement; and something from Paul, either Romans or 1 Corinthians. I also recommend the Epistle of James, which is arguably the world's first communist manifesto.

    Islam
The Qur’an, with its 114 suras, is a bit long. Newcomers might want to start with some of the shorter, earlier, more lyrical revelations toward the end of the volume, then read a few of the longer suras that appear at the beginning
(2, “The Cow”; 4, “Women”; and 5, “The Table”).

    Sikhism
The Adi Granth is the paramount scripture of Sikhism. Two recommended readings in this tradition are The Name of My Beloved: Verses of the Sikh Gurus, translated by Nikky-Guninder Kaur Singh, and Songs of the Saints from the Adi Granth, translated by Nirmal Dass.

From the Daoist tradition, The Zhuangzi has my favorite parable of all time.

One day Zhuangzi fell asleep and dreamed he was a butterfly. When he woke up he did not know if he was really a man who had dreamed of being a butterfly, or if he was a butterfly now dreaming he was a man.

There is no doubt: Donald Trump is box office.

    Mind you, so was Hitler.

’The Donald’ has ridden in like a one-man hurricane, blowing the US Presidential race wide open, defying his many, many critics to sweep aside Jeb Bush, Ted Cruz, John Kasich and the rest to become the last man standing to be the Republican candidate in the race for the White House, before eventually, incredibly, winning the keys to them in November 2017.

Number one, why aren't they fighting for their country? And number two, I don't want these people coming over here."

    ^^ Righty-O.

Trumpism has all the characteristics of a religious cult.

That is the only way to describe a movement whose members have publicly pledged to crawl over broken glass or die for their Dear Leader. One forum member here actually has a quasi-shrine to Trump in their home.

As far as I can tell, these are the moral tenets of Trumpism:

    Avarice
    Dishonesty
    Philandering
    Stupidity
    Self-indulgence
    Hedonism

To be a Trumpist, basically take the ethical maxims of the gospel of Luke, and do the exact opposite.

I have heard many say that it isn't about the orange beast, it is about the judges & the like.......

I guess I should remind them of that as they wander out into the wilderness w/ the failed beast that is now unable to appoint judges etc.....

Default What I got out of the Baghavad Gita

Self discipline is the key to freedom.
It is the key to attaining the freedom from being driven by transitory impulses coming from the outside.

The central teaching of the gita is that liberation, genuine human freedom comes first through discipline, not from release from discipline and constraint. A meaningful life acquires self discipline in these three ways: Right Action, Knowlege, Devotion. Devotion is not necessarily manifested as religious ritual, it is the subordination of your own goals and interests to the goals and welfare of those around you.

The wise men say: a man is learned
When his plans lack constructs of desire
    When his actions are burned
    By the fire of knowledge

    - Baghavad Gita

James 1:16 Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren. 17 Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow.
    Isaiah 6:5
“Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty.”

Hyperbole....but the caustic reprimand of the rich, and their abuse of the working poor in the Epistle of James is as scathing as anything Karl Marx wrote about the landed class and the industrialists.

even if you were being hyperbolic, the solutions proposed by scripture are the antithesis of the solution proposed by Marx......
    Isaiah 6:5
“Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty.”

I accept your tacit admission that one of the most significant tenets of the New Testament was a searing indictment of the rich, of greed and avarice, and a caustic denunciation of the abuse of the working poor by the landed class.

By the standards of world history of that time, that was a truly radical and socially progressive message.

Karl Marx was an atheist. But his message concerning economic oppression is almost identical to the social gospel conveyed in the Epistle of James, in that respect.

apart from your hyperbole, there is no question that the scriptures condemn greed and avarice.....

By the standards of world history of that time, that was a truly radical and socially progressive message.
the message of the bible is radical by the standards of any age........however, Marxism is not the message of the bible....

not identical, not even close.....the gospel conveyed by James was the exact opposite of the gospel proclaimed by Marx.......the fact they agreed on the problem does not mean they agreed on the solution.....
    Isaiah 6:5
“Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty.”

Marx's theory of historical determinism was an utter failure. Marx never even explicitly articulated how he thought a communist society would function and operate.

From an intellectual perspective, the only interesting thing about Marx is that he was asking the right questions, even while his predictions of historical determinism turned out to be laughably wrong.

What Marx had in common with the Christian left and the tenets of parts of the New Testament were a focus on the problems of economic oppression and social justice.

so we concur.......Marxism recognized a problem but had no solutions.......

Since I started this project I have read:
    Gospel of Luke
    Dhammapada
    Daodejing
    Analects of Confucius
    The Zhuangzi
    Bhagavad-Gita
    Hadiths of the prophet Muhammad
    The Prophet Amos and Micah

Take-away nugget: Donald Trumpf would be considered a "kazzab" (one who lies very much) in Islamic tradition.

Honesty leads to goodness and goodness leads to paradise. Once a man has given himself over to honesty and heads in that direction, he will always speak the truth, always search for what is right. Thus, he will be recorded as "siddiq" (truthful) with God. Lying leads to immorality and immorality leads to hell. Once a man has given himself to lies he will always lie. Thus, he will be recorded as "kazzab" (one who lies very much) with God.

I can think of better fictional works than those.
