I don’t blame them. But since they don’t want to I will: for starters, it shows the rift in the Democrat Party. There seems to be a hesitancy by Democrats, to recognize or come to terms with the fact that their party is heavily populated by actual literal radicals. Of which, Antifa is only an extreme and militant faction.
It’s the Democrats version of the Boogoloo Boys except there’s A LOT more of them and—until now, Democrats and their media lapdogs either under reported on them or went as far as deny the existence of. Note the OP is from liberal NPR.
This is just one of things that will change now Trump is gone. Antifa won’t struggle to get into the liberal media.
It’s also a classic example of liberal projection: one of their motives for wringing every living ounce of outrage and fearmongering out of the Capitol mostly peaceful protest was to paint Trump supporters as ‘insurrectionists’, domestic terrorists, white supremacists and etc.
The political benefit is pretty straightforward; They get to use Stalinist tactics to silence the voices of their opposition and, in their minds, it’s justified because every Trump voter is a potential terrorists yada yada.
But also, it gives political cover for the problem with their own radicals. They are projecting.
