liable to encourage resistance to the SED government in any way, such as conscientious objection was completely censored and prohibited. This included, any complaints by individual citizens about the state economy, food shortages, public housing, the state education system, the standard of living, the problem of pollution from the DDR's industrial system. All such negative criticisms were strictly "Verbotten" It was not permissable even to discuss the Berlin Wall, let alone the idea of trying to escape across it to West Germany.
But how could the "Stasi" possibly hope to police this clampdown on free speech at the level of individuals, you ask? The answer is, through sheer numbers. By the time the Berlin Wall fell in late 1989 there were over 91,000 official "Stasi" officers working in the DDR, plus a vast network of hundreds of thousands of East German citizens turned "Stasi" "unofficial informants." They way the "Stasi" recruited these snitches was - to give just one example - by approaching an individual (children and teenagers included) who observedm they had committed some minor transgression, then tell him/her that if they were to "do a favour" for them (the "Stasi") by, say, spying on their neighbours, friends, colleagues at work, relatives and in many cases, even the members of their own families and report back to the "Stasi" any evidence they had seen or heard of anti-state, dissident speech/behaviours, they would be prepared to let the transgression go.
