If President Trump is charged with bribery in connection with selling a pardon, and he believes he has the power to pardon himself from any crime, then who is to stop him from doing so?
But, of course, the current DOJ does not believe they are allowed to charge the president with any crime.
So it would fall upon the House to bring articles of impeachment for bribery.
Then the question arises:
Would the Senate convict Trump of bribery?
What if charges don't come until after Trump concludes his term?
In that case, he can be charged because he would no longer be a sitting president.
And he would no longer have the power to pardon himself.
...
How about this?
He resigns just before January 20th.
Barr charges him with bribery.
Pence becomes president for the duration, and pardons Trump from the bribery charge.
It cannot be undone by Biden.
