Trump faces the prospect of lawsuits and criminal investigations upon leaving office, which his position has previously protected him from. There have been suggestions he could, ahead of leaving his position as commander-in-chief, attempt to pardon himself preemptively from federal crimes.

AMERICAN HISTORY ITSELF IS A TESTAMENT TO THE STRENGTH AND RESILIENCE OF AFRICAN PEOPLE. WE, ALONG WITH THE COURGE AND SACRIFICES OF CONSCIOUS WHITE AMERICANS, LIKE VIOLA LIUZZO, EVERETT DIRKSEN, AND MANY OTHERS, HAVE FOUGHT AND DIED TOGETHER FOR OUR FREEDOM, AND FOR OUR SURVIVAL.
In America, rights are are not determined by what is just, fair, equitable, honest, nor by what Jesus would do. Rights are determined ONLY by what you can DEMAND.

I think Trump is playing, that there is no way he will pardon himself, and that if he did there is no way SCOTUS would allow it.
The bottom line is that conservatives cant admit to themselves the Evil they have allowed to romp on their watch.
This is going to hurt.
Is it just DOJ policy not to prosecute a sitting president? I thought the Supreme Court ruled a president is not immune from criminal prosecution.
"In a 5-4 decision, the Court ruled that the President is entitled to absolute immunity from legal liability for civil damages based on his official acts. The Court, however, emphasized that the President is not immune from criminal charges stemming from his official or unofficial acts while he is in office." [Nixon v. Fitzgerald]

If a president pardons (himself or others) before any charges have been filed, what crime are they pleading guilty to? I thought the purpose of the pardon was to prevent the conviction.
If a person is pardoned after they have already plead guilty and been convicted of a crime it seems moot.
What was Nixon guilty of? Is he a convicted of a felony or misdemeanor?
Interesting:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pardon...n%20indictment.The Ford White House considered a pardon of Nixon, but it would be unpopular in the country. Nixon, contacted by Ford emissaries, was initially reluctant to accept the pardon but then agreed to do so. Ford, however, insisted on a statement of contrition; Nixon felt he had not committed any crimes and should not have to issue such a document. Ford eventually agreed, and on September 8, 1974, he granted Nixon a "full, free, and absolute pardon" that ended any possibility of an indictment. Nixon then released a statement:
I was wrong in not acting more decisively and more forthrightly in dealing with Watergate, particularly when it reached the stage of judicial proceedings and grew from a political scandal into a national tragedy. No words can describe the depth of my regret and pain at the anguish my mistakes over Watergate have caused the nation and the presidency, a nation I so deeply love, and an institution I so greatly respect.[12][13][14]

Why didn't you just say you don't know? I did not include any opinions in my post, I was asking questions for somebody who might know.
Obviously, there is no answer to whether a president can issue an "open" pardon like he did Nixon.
Saying a pardon is a plea of guilty is somewhat limited. The Burdick case which issued that opinion was about a man who turned down his pardon to avoid losing his 5th Amendment right.
Assume a person is convicted of a crime and goes to prison and is then proven not guilty. If the president pardons that person and he accepts the pardon, does that mean he is pleading guilty to a crime he has already been proven he did not commit?
Maybe Floridafan will smarten up and help us out with this one.
