That is the problem. You cannot unify a nation if a large minority does not even want a democracy.

Do you really think that's the problem or are you just being pithy? I believe that most Americans wholeheartedly believe in democracy. I also believe that the two-party system has been manipulated to catastrophe. Money controls politicians. Politicians care more about reelection than policy improvements. The system is broken, but I still have hope in the American population (minus the Trumpists).

the country has never been unified in its history the unity thing went out the window when the United States bought Catholic Louisiana and it's been non-unified ever since. The country is in the process of traditioning from the old school Christian values to the new school human values. The idea that fundamentalist Christians will ever unify with atheists is absurd. From 1932 to 1937 Joseph Stalin declared the 'five-year plans of atheism' and the LMG was charged with completely eliminating all religious expression in the country. We don’t have a democracy. We have a constitution and a constitutional republic and some democratic institutions and processes.

Too many progressives look at the constitution as an impediment. They’re always looking for ways to finagle their way around it or turn it into a ‘living document’.
