Few called for draconian cuts. Many will be happy with what is being done, and most, if not all of these measures have been approved by residents.

Let’s face it, guys: We’re done.

It is a tragedy that so much of the work that so many men and women toiled at for so long to make this a better country, and a better world, has been thrown away, leaving us all in such needless peril.

This is why our separation in all but name is necessary.

Comparing the officer-to-population ratio for the nation's 50 largest police department jurisdictions, we find that Seattle is on the low side, as the reader suspected. The average ratio for the 50 largest jurisdictions is 26.9 officers for every 10,000 residents. Seattle falls well below that, at 18.5 per 10,000.

Among the 50, Seattle ranks in the bottom half, but close to the middle, at 28th. The cities with ratios closest to Seattle are Las Vegas (18.7) and Omaha, Nebraska (18.3).

Seattle had 1,419 officers in 2019, serving an estimated population of about 764,000 residents, according to the FBI.

Seattle now has 1200 cops, dropping fast.

Exactly, but if you listen to those on the right entire police forces are being decimated, Wavey Gravey's "please force" is going to police the streets

The right shares the blame for these measures. The US has become a global embarrassment with the slaughter of its black citizens and protests against racial injustice sprung up virtually all over the world.

thing is a 9-11 call is rarely clear if it needs a social worker or a cop
does domestic violence need counseling or arrests? (ex.) maybe both.

Cops get there and secure the scene, then the social peeps can show up / cutting funding is insane

Baltimore is a shithole / NYC is becoming a shithole /Portland can't control its streets -anybody make the business owners there after CHOP (etc)

defunding is NOT the answer -better training and a list of rogue cops that cant get hired again is the way
This was Sen. Tim Scotts bill, that Pelosi would not negotiate -we could have had national standard in place by now

It appears that every urban city is a shithole to you and the major impediment to police accountability has been republicans who think every urban city is a shithole like you do.

Always cracks one up when someone characterizes cities they either have never been to or visited once as a tourist, Bmore is Bmore, always been that way, NYC is far from descending into a “shithole,” and I’ve never been to Portland so know little about it

And Scott’s bill was watered down to just about nothing, Pelosi wanted additions, which Mitch opposed

I'm from Baltimore. it was a crime ridden place when I left in 1999.
Freddie Grey riots turned it into a complete shithole -cops wont even patrol certain areas anymore
Urban decay is even worse now. the city is actually losing population

as to NYC -look at the crime stats since "defunding" and police flight

not at all. Florida urban areas are thriving -protests dont do anything for crime or quality of life- they make it worse.

I get you, however the mayor and council should hire a police chief that will train folks that work with the police and fund that rather than defund and try to make due with folks that will not be with the police and defund the actual police thus ensuring that less training and less resources underscore and reinforce the same systemic issues that supposedly they are working to fix.

I speak ASL and Russian, a good portion of Spanish as well... train someone like me to work with the police not separate from them. Improve them rather than try to deliberately impair them.

This idea that systemic issues can be resolved by systemic punishment and no framework for improvement is absurd. It literally shoots itself in the head then wonders why things didn't get better with the wound in the knee.
Excellence is an art won by training and habituation. We do not act rightly because we have virtue or excellence, but rather we have those because we have acted rightly. We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit.

Don’t get it twisted, I’ve never counted you in. Quite obviously your approval, nor the approval of people who think like you
Is not required. This issue is now further advanced then it has ever been in the long centuries old sordid history of police murders of nonwhite citizens and your input is not required
