Camden is becoming a model for other cities to embrace, then Gov. Chris Christie after citing a 30%drop in overall crime AFTER disbanding its police force. It shows that we can do things differently. Earjier in the day, Christie praised the caliber of the new county force saying that 50%of the new county force had 4year college degrees, and praised The departments use of technology, including eye in the sky cameras, license plate scanners, and increased outreach to the community.
In short, Camden, NJ disbanded its city police department in April 2013 to make way for the newly created county police force.At the time, Camden was one of the worst cities for crime in the country. But, by going to a regional model for policing which put more emphasis on the character and education of its recruits, instead of just military experience, and greater emphasis on community outreach and interactions better officers and better results were achieved.
