The Seattle City Council on Monday cut its police department budget by nearly 17% in a shift that grew out of this summers national protests against systematic racism. I believe we are laying the groundwork to make systematic and lasting changes to policing, Durbin said in a statement. We have rightly put forward a plan to ensure that SPD has enough officers to meet 911 response and investigative needs through the city, while acknowledging and addressing the disproportionate impacts policing has had on our communities of color, particularly the black community.

    Nice try indeed.

Agreed, but this has less to do with Covid and far more to do with a national outrage.

The countries two largest cities New York and Los Angeles, approved budget cuts weeks after protests began. New York slashed 1 billion from its 2021budget, totalling 88.9 billion, while Los Angeles approved a 150 million dollar cut from its
    1.86 billion proposed budget.

San Francisco a 120 million dollar cut to i.6 million dollar reduction
    ts police and Sheriff departments.
Oakland, California passed a 14.6 million dollar reduction
    Washington,DC a 15 million dollar cut

    Portland cut 16 million
    Philadelphia cut 33 million
Hartford, Connecticut cut 1 million from its 40 million dollar budget
Norman, Oklahoma cut 865,000 from its police budget
Salt Lake City slashed 5.3 million from its police budget

Several other cities are mulling the reallication of funds from their own departments

I get the outrage but don't understand how slashing police budget helps this. They'll be even less training and probably even more hires from those with tactical experience from elsewhere. In other words, it might just increase the brutal tactics when they hire in more people trained in the military with even less police training.

It really didn't seem that the budget was used for training but rather for military gear right out of an actual army invasion. And if funds were being used for training on how to deal with the public, the funds were totally wasted. It absolutely is another broken system of the many we sadly have here in the USA and begs for major revamping.

    Dear Red-State Trump Voter,
Let’s face it, guys: We’re done.

It is a tragedy that so much of the work that so many men and women toiled at for so long to make this a better country, and a better world, has been thrown away, leaving us all in such needless peril.

This is why our separation in all but name is necessary.

Why should the OP be embarrassed?

While some Seattle activists had demanded a 50-percent police budget deduction, Mayor Jenny Durkan said she backs these lesser cuts, calling them "thoughtful and deliberate" and saying the city will prioritize "what services we need from the Seattle Police Department and how we can scale up alternatives to policing."

“I believe we are laying the groundwork to make systemic and lasting changes to policing," Durkan said in a statement. "We have rightly put forward a plan that seeks to ensure SPD has enough officers to meet 911 response and investigative needs throughout the city, while acknowledging and addressing the disproportionate impacts policing has had on communities of color, particularly Black communities."

money will be moved to policing alternatives, like mental health squads that will answer situations with mentally ill people and situations that police are ill equipped to handle also demilitarize the police

Geebus that's just stupid... If you need social workers, or shrinks, etc. to go along with the cops when they go on calls that you think will be improved by such folks you don't remove funding, you increase it. With less money there will be less training thus ensuring further institutionalized issues that cannot be resolved.
Excellence is an art won by training and habituation. We do not act rightly because we have virtue or excellence, but rather we have those because we have acted rightly. We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit.
