Interesting. Biden wants to be a uniter but also wants to get his agenda in motion. Maybe a tit-for-tat with the cultists? "You pass this legislation and we won't hand over #LOSER45's tax returns to investigators"?

No they couldn't, not without causing a problem for their own Administration... because it is against the law.

Federal law makes it a crime for an IRS agent (or any other federal employee) willfully to disclose unauthorized tax returns. If an agent did indeed willfully release President Trump’s unauthorized tax return, he or she could be subject to five years in prison and a fine of up to $5,000. Upon conviction, federal law provides that he or she would also lose his or her job.

So. No, they really couldn't. The government acting in such a way by order of a President would absolutely be a "high crime".

Congress can claim a special need or such -not sure of the details but they can do it

Every president of the modern era made their tax returns public. I do not think it is a good precedent for Trump to make the president's finances secret and hidden from the American public.

If nothing else, I believe Trump's taxes should be made public because we are not a criminal oligarchy like Putin's Russia. His precedent should not be allowed to stand

I agree but don't think that minus a criminal investigation, that they can be turned over w/o his consent. I don't want to establish that precedent, either.

The criminal investigation is already in progress.

I don't really care about that now but it should be made law that all presidents show they are free of influencing assets especially foreign. It should be made law that all future candidates that make the election should have to go under such scrutiny. Same could be said for our senators and representatives but they'd never vote that through. These people of power work for the people in a democratic society. They all should show they are free of being bought and sold to influence their usage of power. In good faith Biden should show his tax returns and if Trump want to run again he has to show his.

One of the House Committees investigating say Trump’s profiting off the Gov’t could subpoena such, and out of power, there wouldn’t be the imperial presidency argument nor a billy barr around to stall or fight it

Doubtful Biden would go that route, unlike Trump, it’s not him, not that unethical nor petty

I am skeptical that Democrats setting a good example is going to change the tone in Congress

Republicans investigated Hillary Clinton for the better part of three decades. The dragged Hunter Biden, who was not even running for public office, through the mud.

There is a school of thought that only when Republicans feel intolerable pain are they going to rethink their use of government resouces to persecute perceived political enemies.

The vile and unethical things that (R)s have done over the years piss me off too. But I want to get back to having a POTUS who does not think he's above the law, and who actually respects it. I'm okay with letting the State Attorneys General take care of the malignant criminal family.

no. absolutely not. not for an investigatory reason unless it was a formal impeachment thing or maybe Special Counsel
Other then that there has to be "legislative purpose"

But not release it publicly. Basically, they can see it, but they couldn't talk about it or it would be subject to that same law and they, as a federal employee, can lose their job after serving their time.

for those who refuse to do any research:

    https://www.yalejreg.com/nc/can-cong...s-tax-returns/
In a recent Washington Post article, Professor George Yin argues that Congress can force Trump to make his returns available for legislative review. Legislators have embraced similar arguments. See Reuters (Feb. 10, 2017). Representative Pascrell, in particular, has been vocal on this issue. See USA Today (Feb. 11, 2017).

The statutory authority* for any congressional requests would probably come from Sections 6103(f)(1) & (2) of the tax code. Under (f)(1), some committees of Congress can request disclosure of Trump’s returns and can examine those returns privately. Under (f)(2), a non-partisan career official, the Chief of Staff of the Joint Committee on Taxation (JCT), may also request and privately examine those returns. Professor Yin argues that information obtained through Section 6103(f) can be subsequently disclosed to the public, when public disclosure serves a legitimate legislative purpose.*
