I can see why some polling companies would inflate one side or the other, they are being funded by donors or parties or campaigns to push a narrative, but why would independent polling firms try to push the idea that one side is winning and the other is not?

If they were trying to influence an election would the campaign not want their voters to believe it is very close, or that they are just a smigion behind?

I've been trying to figure out if it's outdated methodologies or if they legitimately think there's something to be gained from all of this. Most likely it's the former, and they're being lazy and unwilling to adapt.

In part this is the problem. How polling works is they use one or more methods to systematically locate those in the poll. This can be by zip code, area code on the phone, county, etc. The problem today is in part that people have mobile phones. So, you get say a phone poll that has people in one state listed as a phone number in another, so the polling company thinks you are in the place where your phone is listed while you really are in another state voting entirely.

That's just one issue. Some people barely get "snail mail" any more. This is another. If you don't have a mailing address you can't receive polling material by mail.

It's society is going through another technological revolution at the moment and things haven't been completely sorted out as to how they will run in the end yet. That is creating uncertainty and in part is getting bad polling results.

Long before an election - telling one side they are losing badly is away to discourage support. It helps to become a self fulfilling prophecy. Why donate money to the guy that is sure to lose? Why go to rally's?

Fortunately, the polling company's have that solved. They can lie and claim huge leads all summer, then lie and claim just now the polls are tightening - the only polls that they are graded on are the final ones (the ones we have not seen yet). By then, its too late for money to get pumped in to buy ad, but atleast it won't prevent a Biden voter from voting - he now is not being told his guy is way in front
