Default Newlyweds Killed In Plane Crash Near Telluride

A newlywed Florida couple, a United Airlines pilot and his Flight Attendant wife, were killed flying home from their honeymoon after flying into a mountain. The cause is currently unknown, but I suspect Density Altitude rather than Inadvertent IMC since the Bonanza was flown by an experienced pilot.

A couple from Florida died in a plane crash near Telluride Monday — just four days after their wedding. The San Miguel Sheriff’s office says Costas Sivyllis, 30, and Lindsey Vogelaar, 33, were killed when their Beechcraft Bonanza went down just 15 minutes after take off.

“They had eloped to Telluride for a small wedding and adventure-filled honeymoon that they were documenting online for friends and families to follow,” the sheriff’s office stated.

The newlyweds were heading back to Florida. They were the only two on the aircraft.

I wouldn't be surprised to find that their deaths are attributed to the China virus when the latest "death toll" is reported.

The good news is that such deaths are instantaneous. It appears he drove straight into the mountain. Unlike Steve Fossett's crash which was scattered over a wide area, this one is confined to the impact area. In a Density Altitude-type accident, he probably stalled it trying to get over the mountain and came nose down into the dirt, left wing down, then the aircraft settled back onto it's belly after impact. Impact speed would be between 100 and 140 knots.

God bless America and those who defend our Constitution.

I think they'd worked themselves to exhaustion by that point. He's a professional pilot and would probably not risk such a thing with so many rocks around. Besides, it was shortly after take off so he was probably still climbing out...or trying to.

FWIW, MHC is best done in cruise with the power and trim set.

DU says the cause is unknown. If they test positive for Covid, that will be listed as the cause.
