Proud Boys celebrate Trump’s remarks with ‘Stand back and stand by’ T-shirts

Members of the Proud Boys, a white supremacist group, have been celebrating President Trump’s order to them to “stand back and stand by” during the first presidential debate Tuesday night.

Apparel marked with a Proud Boys logo and the president’s quote is being sold on Teespring.com, according to the Miami Herald. It’s unclear if there is a connection between that site and the group.

Members and other far-right social media users have also been making memes, like one of President Trump in the Proud Boys’ signature black polo shirts with yellow trim.

One user on Telegram said that the group is seeing an increase in “new recruits.”

Andrew Anglin, the founder of the neo-Nazi website the Daily Stormer, wrote on the site that “Trump didn’t condemn anyone, and he didn’t tell them to stand down – he told them to stand back and to stand by.”

He wrote that the president’s statement indicates that Trump was telling militiamen to “wait until I give the signal.”

“He is telling the people to stand by. As in: get ready for war,” Anglin wrote. “In a month’s time, your president could ask you to go out into the streets and defend your country. You need to be ready to do that.”
