No. Ebola, for example, kills directly. So does smallpox.

With most of the viruses the victims die from pneumonia, respiratory distress or some other organ failure.

Actually, we die because we suffocate. The lungs fail, the heart stops, the brain dies by suffocation. That is true of viruses, bacteria, accidents, getting shot, drowning, etc.
It is possible to poison the brain (such as with alcohol), progressively shutting down function until it finally shuts down life support functions, but that doesn't kill it. It's the heart stopping or respiratory failure that kills it.

Even if one's head is destroyed in an explosion, the brain cells are alive (though disconnected from each other!). They die because they can't get nourishment...essentially suffocation just the same.

The brain is a high oxygen demand organ. It demands a lot of nourishment as well. It doesn't last long without these.

Yes. You are correct. Respiratory viruses kill indirectly through pneumonia, a bacteriological infection. This can be tough to treat if it gets away from you. You have to get it early, and you have to be aggressive with the antibiotics. Iron lungs can assist for a short time to allow the antibiotics a chance to work, if necessary.
