In March, my governor all but assured us it was going to be near apocalyptic. He framed it as ‘not if, but when’. I was still at work at the time; some of my co-workers were literally panicky; one of them refused to enter her house and slept in the garage. We were being told some of us may be called to work critical care if workers started to fall sick. It was scary—even had me going for a couple weeks.

Now it’s September. Our beds are filling up—but the panic is gone. My daughter works at our nearest med center in perfusion [heart lung machine for heart surgery]; in fact, she was just telling me they’re starting to use ECMO more there since heart patients will sometimes end up on ECMO post-op so they have ECMO units available for critical COVID patients.

They lose some—but not many. The treatments are nothing like what they were early in the game.

The panic is gone. People want to get on with their lives.
